PALMER BEATS CAMPBELL

NEW ZEALANDER SEVERELY PUNISHED REFEREE STOPS. FIGHT Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, May 2. At the stadium to-night tho National Sporting Club of Australasia brought together Ambrose Palmer (Australia) and Alan Campbell (New Zealand) in a contest for the heavy-weight boxing championship of the dominions and 1 the Beauchamp Belt. The contest ended in a sensational manner, the referee stopping the light in the' ninth round and declaring Palmer the winner. Palmer scaled 11.10 and Campbell, 12.4. Tho first two rounds were evenly contested, but in the third Palmer scored repeatedly with straight lefts, the New Zealander bleeding from an eye and tho mouth; nevertheless, the latter continued to attack. In round four Campbell stung Palmer with a left hook, and forced him to the ropes. Palmer, however, came back with a two-handed attack', and squared matters. In round five Palmer continued to score with his left, and it was apparent that his body punches hurt Campbell. The New Zealander was bleeding profusely in the next round, when Palmer continued his vigorous onslaught, the Australian piling up points by repeatedly slamming Campbell’s gory face. The latter’s defence was too open. Palmer also bad the better of matters in the clinches, stinging Campbell with sharp uppercuts. After more severe punishment in the eighth round the referee asked Campbell if he wanted to continue, and lie signified that he did, but in the ninth Campbell was floored with a count of eight, and after further punishment the referee stopped the fight. An additional attraction was the State welter-weight championship, Wally Hancock (10.6) outpointing Billy Grime (10.5) over tea rounds.
