DISTURBING FACTORS

YORKSHIRE WOOLLEN INDUSTRY, MR DEVEREUX'S REPORT Prais Association —By Telegraph—Copyrights LONDON, May 1. < (Received May 2, at 9.55 a.m.) Mr W. P. Devereux (Australian wool - representative) reports: “ The revision of the British'tariff on textiles , and yarns had a very disturbing effect in wool circles, checking new business in Yorkshire, but it has stimulated new. hope in the Continental' centres. Despite the representations made the new duties will remain in force for twelve months. Meanwhile the industry in Great Britain can put forward facta and figures for the Tariff Advisory Committee to investigate. The Irish Free State and Belgium have increased the duties on woollen textiles. Holland is instituting the. regulation of imports under license. Despite the disturbance arising from these causes, Bradford is fairly cheerful, and a rather more confident feeling is i shown _in Germany. ( Prices for tops have not improved, but ' the volume of sales has increased.” _ ■ “ There is some increase in activity in France for home account, and when the election interest-subsides increased, machinery activity may be seen. The Belgian trade is very quiet.”
