SPORT IN SOUTH OTAGO
(From Oub Cobbbspohbbkt.] FOOTBALL The first games of the competitions were played in South Otago on Saturday, the weather being fine but cold. Owing to heavy rains the previous any the grounds were rather soft. At Balclutba two games were played, the first being a third grade match between South Otago High School and Crescent. School won, 19-3. The senior game was between Clutha and Valley. The new scrum formation, 3-2-3, was used, and the unlamiliarity of the teams with the new style caused many interruptions. Play w r as almost entirely in Clutha’s favour, the Valley team troubling the home defence very occasionally. The final score was 32-0, in favour of Clutha. The scoring was as follows: Henderson 2, Muir 2, Gold 2, A. Hurring 1, E. Hurring .1. Moffat converted four of the tries. —Other Results.— First Grade.—Owaka 6, Toko 0; Crescent 9, Clinton 0. Second Grade.—Toko 19, Clutha 3; Coast 3, Union 3; Waitahuna 8,-Wai-hola 0. Third Grade.—Clutha defaulted to Toko. HOCKEY Balclutha met Waiwera at Balcfutha and were defeated, 4-3. The home side fielded a scratch team. COURSING The South Otago Coursing Club held a one-event meeting on the enclosure at Otanomomo on Saturday afternoon. There were fifteen entries, representing owners from Taieri, Dunedin, and Southland. The hares were in good condition, and in fifteen runs only five kills were made. Mr S. V. White, Balclutha, acted as judge. The following are the results : First Round.—R. Mitchell’s Gay Lass (8} points) beat A. Rattray’s High Comedy (7), R. Dickson’s Night Time (2) beat J. Gold’s Black Sami (0), J. Tatham’s Waireka (4) beat J. Wilson’s Quick Step (.0), N. Marshall’s Orra (5) beat N. Finuie’s Camisader (0), C. Woodward’s Scotch Heather (3) beat J. Gold’s Black Duke (1); Dowling Bros.’ Lupin (1) beat Cris. O’Hara’s Heather Lass (0); G. Heasley’s Taieri Special : (2) beat G. Hensley’s Lady Belle (0), J. Tatham’s Waiinarie, a bye.
