OFFER TO TREASURY CHANCELLOR UNABLE TO ACCEPT OFFER frm Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. ‘ LONDON, April 16. -The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Neville Chamberlain) replied to Lady Houston’s offer, and said that Parliament alone was in a position to allocate the resources of the Exchequer to any particular object. It was therefore impossible to. accept gifts for expenditure on particular services, though he appreciated the 1 spirit that prompted the offer. , The Navy League ’has telegraphed to Lady Houston pointing out that onetwentieth of her proffered gift would enable the league .to sway public opinion till it was realised that England is in deadly peril. [Lady Houston wrote to the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Neville Chamberlain) offering a cheque of £200,000 instead of a cheque for £40,000 due as income tax. She proposed that the extra amount should go towards .the cost of an adequate Army, Navy, and Air Force, which Lady Houston considers requires an addition of £5,000,000 in the coming Budget.]
