WOOL TEXTILE TRADE
BRADFORD MANUFACTURERS BUSY MARKED REVIVAL EXPECTED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, April 16. (Received April 13, at 9 a.m.) Bradford textile manufacturers fully confirm Mr Runciman’s reference to West Riding; While there is no trade boom the position encourages manufacturers to anticipate a marked revival in the near future. The export trade is hindered by the currency restrictions in many European and South American countries, but though the turnover has still a long way to go to normality, returns are showing a continuous improvement. The tops yarn trade is considerably better than m 1931, and the spinning trade shows a marked improvement owing to the exclusion of foreign yarns. The only obstacle to complete recovery is the instability of wool prices, which cheeks forward buying. [The encouraging results of the recent surveys of British industries were reviewed by Mr Runciman (President of the Board of Trade) during a debate in the House of Commons. Ho said that in West Riding (Yorkshire) there had been greater activity than for years past, the mills having ceased short-time work, and many of them were working overtime.] MR DEVEREUX'S REPORT , LONDON, April 16. (Received April JB, at 9 a.m.) Mr N. P. Devereux reports: “The general position is unchanged. British manufacturers are awaiting the announcement next week of the intentions of the Government in regard to duties on wool textiles. Continental manufacturers are watching the position closely and pending a decision all are disinclined to enter speculative commitments. The decline in values at the opening sales in London were largely anticipated, but since the opening Continental competition has become little more apparent, but insufficient to influence values. Bradford reports aveiy quiet market.”
