PROPOSED SALE OF LABRADOR
UNSUCCESSFUL OFFER TO CANADA OTTAWA, April 2, Papers tabled showed that last October Newfoundland offered to sell Labrador to Canada for £22.000,000, £2,600,000 to be paid in cash, £17,400,000 by Canada assuming Newfoundland’s Public Debt, and a further £2,000,000 iu cash when a clear title was available. The existing fishing rights of the inhabitants of Newfoundland on the Labrador coast were to bo protected. The Newfoundland Ministry had passed an Order in Council embodying these terms, but Mr Bennett, the Canadian Prime Minister, rejected the offer because of existing economic and financial conditions. He advised the Newfoundland Government that there seemed no likelihood of Canada being in a position in the near future to give consideration to the proposal.
