SCHOOLS’ SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

ALBANY STREET RETAINS BEGG GUP W. J. JARVIS BREAKS N.Z. RECORD Seeing that W. J. Jarvis’s records for several events in the primary schools’ swimming. championships still .stand, and that it is only a few years since he was an outstanding performer at this meeting, it was fitting that he should have selected the schools’ carnival for his attempt on the New Zealand senior 60yds record of 25 4-ssec. Jarvis’s swim was made under official record conditions, and, gliding through the water with smooth, clean strokes, he carved out a fast length, and, though he lost slightly on the turn, sprinted strongly for the rope, and covered the distance in the new record time of 25isec. In Auckland recently R. Frankham was credited with 25 2-ssec, but it is understood that this time will not be recognised, since in a handicap event there must be three special watches on the swimmer attempting the record. Thus Jarvis, though only fifteen years of age last January, is the first Otago man to hold a Sew Zealand national record. The announcement that the brilliant young swimmer had set new figures was received with tremendous enthusiasm by the large crowd of spectators present, three tumultous cheers being given for Jarvis at the request of Mr A. Hanna, president of the State Primary Schols’ Sports Association. For the record attempt the officials were appointed by the Otago Swimming Centre, Mr W. A. Jenkins being the starter; Mr W. H. Buckland, check starter and referee; Messrs T. P. Williamson, FaJ. Townsend, and T. Fogg, timekeepers; Mr E. G. James, timekeeper’s steward; and Messrs D. Banna tyne, W. Williams, and W. H. Buckland, judges. Although Albany Street retained possession of the Begg Cup by a big margin of points, Arthur Street Normal, and St. Clair scored a number or successes, and the carnival may be voted one of the best yet held by the association, the performances generally being of a very high standard. Albany Street won the Cup with 59 points, Arthur Street and Normal being run-ners-up with 20 points each. St. Clair was next with 14,. Macandrew Road 3, Forbury 2, and George Street 1. Several of the existing records were again improved upon, and new figures have been set in five events, one other being equalled. The New Zealand junior champion, Sid Jarvis (Albany Street), won the 33/R3yds and 66 2-3 yds boys’ championships (under fourteen) in 20 l-spec and 47 2-ssec respectively, the former time being 3-ssec better than the previous record, though a fifth of a second slower than the new figures he hung up in his heat on Thursday night. Jarvis showed splendid style, and is undoubtedly a much-im-proved swimmer. Miss R. Jarvis completed a night of achievement by the family in , winning for Albany Street the girls’ width (under twelve) and the 25yds girls (under thirteen) in 18 l-ssec.

Miss O. Buckland, also of Albany Street, improved on her own record, put up on Thursday night, of 21 2-ssec, for 25yds breaststroke girls (under fourteen) by winning the final in the fast time of 21sec. She also swam second in the girls’ 33 l-3yds free style championship (under fourteen), which was won by Miss B. Macassey, of St. Clair, in the record time of 24 3-ssec, an improvement of four-fifths of a second on the new figures put up by Miss Buckland in a heat on Thursday night. _ Miss Macassey swam a fine race, finishing very strongly. D. Tuckwell was another good performer, the Arthur Street boy winning the 25yds under twelve in 16 2-ssec from W. W. Buckland (Albany Street), who accounted for tlie 33 l-3yds boys (under thirteen) in 24 4-ssec. , Roy Geddes won the 25yds (under eleven; breaststroke in 23 4-ssec, and was second to W. Williams in the 25yds free style championship (under eleven). N. Williams gave a good display to win the boys’ diving, and much promise was shown by J. Clayton, winner of the girls’ dive. The diving events were judged by Messrs W. A. Jenkins, E. G. James, and Mrs E. C. Isaacs, officials provided by the Otago Centre. During the evening an interesting display of swimming was given by Reg. Geddes, W. J. Jarvis, and Miss Maxine Mathieson, the children voicing their appreciation in no uncertain terms. Albany Street won two of the relays, Arthur Street two, and St. Clair one, and, apart from the record established by Arthur Street in a heat of the mixed relay on Thursday night, Albany Street put up new figures for. the boys' junior relay of 34 l-ssec in a heat, also bettering the'old record in the final, while Normal improved on it in a heat. A lengthy programme was again put through in quick time, the organisation being excellent. The superintendent (Mr H. D. Morgan) and the secretary (Mr R. S. Harrison) were supported by a strong band of capable officials. Results;— GIRLS’ JUNIOR RELAY (under 12), - four width of baths. First heat: Arthur Street 1, Forbury 2, George Street 3. Fleming (head master of the Albany Street School), Mr A. Hanna (president of the Schools’ Sports Association) expressed appreciation of the support accorded the carnival by the parents. The success of the meeting was a credit to Mr H. D. Morgan (chairman of the Swimming Committee), his secretary (Mr R. S. Harrison), and a very loyal sub-committee of lady and men teachers. (Applause.) He expressed his thanks to Messrs P. A. Mathieson and W. Hindmarsh (of the baths staff) for assistance and advice readily given,

and to all tho others who had cooperated in making the meeting a success. Ho expressed the association’s appreciation of the very fine performance of W. J. Jarvis in breaking the New Zealand record, and those who knew Walter were proud of him, not so much because of tho success he had achieved, but because he had borne his successes with a manly modesty that was a credit to the teachers who had taught him. (Applause.) Air Hanna referred to tho lack of swimming facilities in Dunedin, and said that it was strange that there should be only one pool here when one considered the facilities the city had for the playing of cricket and football. Ho hoped the Swimming Centre and the Schools’ Sports Association would not rest until Dunedin had the same facilities, for swimming as other centres. (Applause.) PREVIOUS WINNERS. The previous winners of tho Begg Cup were:—l9l6-17-18, Arthur Street; 1919-20, no competition; 1921, Arthur Street; 1922, High Street; 1923, no competition; 1924, Normal; 1926, Moray Place; 1927-28, Albany Street; 1929, Normal; 1930-31, Albany Street.
