MANCHESTER UNITY

The Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge met on Tuesday evening in the ALU. Hall, Stuart street, when N.G. Bro. R. Sharp presided over a good attendance of members. As the previous meeting had been held a month ago owing to Easter intervening, a considerable amount of business and correspondence was dealt with. Owing to the lengthy nature of the business the report of the delegates who attended the annual district meeting was held over until next meeting. One new member was initiated. The N.G. announced that the next lodge night would be devoted to the commemoration of Anzac, and arrangements had been made for P.P.G.AI. Bro. J. H. Hamel to deliver an address suitable to the occasion. He hoped that there would bo a big attendance of members to do honour to their fallen brethren. After the transaction of business the lodge adjourned, and lady friends were entertained at a card evening. _ The attendance fully taxed the capacity of the hall, and after an enjoyable evening prizes were presented to the winners as follows; —Ladies, Airs Bailey and Airs Miller; men, P.G.s Bros. Turnbull and W. Longworth. Another milestone in the history of the Alanchester Unity in the Otago district has been passed with the establishment of a juvenile lodge at Oamaru. The official opening was, a successful function, over 100 members and visitors being present from nil parts of the Otago and South Canterbury district. Permanent Secretary Bro. W. Couper, of the Loyal Oamaru Lodge, in introducing the provincial _ grand master, spoke briefly of tho history of the foimatiou of the new branch. Tho P.G.M. (Bro. !il. Longworth), in taking the chair, thanked the Oamaru Lodge for tho invitation to be present at the inaugural gathering, and after introducing the members of the Otago District Juvenile Council, asked them to take charge of the proceedings. P.G. Bro. Roberts, president of the council, then took the chair, and was assisted by members of the council and the local Alanagemcnt Committee in tho initiation ceremony.. avoidably shortened through lack of time was impressively carried out, ten boys being initiated as the first members of the new lodge. Nominations were then called for the filling of the various chairs, resulting as follows: N.G., Bro. N. Jenkin; V.G., Bro. G. W. Hesselyn; E.S., Bro. D. A. Brown; warden, Bro. C. J. Boaden; guardian, Bro. E. R. Heselwood; G.M., Bro. T. Finder. F.G. Bro. H. Keen was elected conductor for the first term. The installation ceremony was capably conducted by Bro. Roberts, who was assisted bv a number of visiting officers. Among the latter were representatives of the two local lodges, Dunedin lodges, and district officers of South Canterbury and Ashley districts. Letters of congratulations and good wishes were received and read from lodges from all parts of the Otago district. Following the closing of the lodge a dainty supper was served by the sistei’s of the Loyal Star of the North (ladies) Lodge, and the evening was brought to a conclusion with an enjoyable dance. There was a large gathering of members of the order in the Prince of Wales Lodge Hall, Port Chalmers on Wednesday evening, the occasion being an official visit to the local lodge. The N.G. (Bro. G. Smillie) presided and extended a welcome to the visitors, expressing pleasure at the large and representative attendance, practically every city and suburban lodge being represented. The P.G.M., Bro, L, C. Calvert, accompanied by the district officers, was also present. The P.G.M. during the evening took the opportunity of introducing the newly-elected P.D.G.M. (Bro. R. S. Jack) to his own lodge and the sister lodges present. Bro. Jack is a well-known' member of the Prince of Wales Lodge, and the N.G., on behalf of his fellow members, extended hearty congratulations to the new district officer and assured him of the full support and co-operation of his lodge. Members of visiting lodges also extended their congratulations and good wishes. Bro. Jack briefly responded, thanking the lodges for electing him to executive rank, and he assured them of his desire to do his best for the good of the order. Members of visiting lodges and the district officers acknowledged the toast of “ The Visitors,” after; which a first-class musical pro-

gramme was presented. Following tin* supper was served, and the evening concluded with a dance.

The Loyal Caversham Lodge held it* fortnightly meeting in the Oddfellows’* Hall, Forbury corner, on Wednesday evening. There was a good muster o£ members, the N.G. (Bro. J. H. Smith)! being in the chair. Two new members were initiated. _ A full report of the business transacted at the annual district meeting was given by the delegates from the lodge, who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their services. Tile secretary_ of the Otago District Juvenile Council (Bro. E. J,' Hey) reported that he had been present at the opening of the Loyal Oaraam Juvenile Lodge, and that the new lodge had good prospects, there _ being ten more new members to be initiated at the next meeting. The lodge adjourned to allow the “ Ladies’ Night ” to be carried out. The N.G. welcomed a largo number of visitors, who later took part in a progressive euchre tournament. The prize winners were: —Ladies, Mrs M'Quinnell and Mrs Russell; men, Bros. Westlake and Isaacs.
