FOR SAFER NAVIGATION

FLASHING LIGHT ON BANKS PENINSULA [Special to the ’ Star.’) CHRISTCHURCH. April 15. A commencement will be made in the next few days with the erection of a navigation light on the steep head at the entrance to Lo Bon’s Bay, at the easternmost portion of Banks Peninsula. The position is latitude 43deg 45min south, longitude 173 deg Bmin 42sec east. The light will be an unwatched flashing light, and is expected to be working by May 17. Most of the material is already at Lo Bon’s Bay. The new light has been asked for for some years by master mariners. At present there is no light between Akaroa Head, at the extreme south end of the peninsula, and Codlcy Head, on the north. A large portion of the eastern extremity of the peninsula is therefore uulightcd, and ships have to take a wide course for safety, with a consequent loss of time. The now light will make for safety in thick weather, and enable steamers to take a closer course in fair weather.
