+ RELIEF WORKERS’ STRIKE MOST CROUPS ON DUTY Practically the whole of the scheme No. 5 relief groups which, were due to work to-day are carrying on, and no serious trouble has been reported. According to an afternoon progress report of the count in connection with the secret ballot, those who were _in favour of working were establishing an overwhelming majority, and there can be little doubt as to the final result of the poll. There were rumours yesterday that there was a chance of the strike being called off last night, but at a mass meeting of the unemployed a resolution was carried expressing the intention of those present to continue the strike. The streets of the city have been free from any unemployment demonstrations to-day, only a. small gathering of men and women taking up a stand in the Octagon in front of the Town Hall. Generally speaking, a very orderly atmosphere prevailed. HOSPITAL BOARD AID The matter of doing something further to relieve unemployment distress was given considerable attention at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Benevolent Committee of the Otago Hospital Board. The discussion was taken in committee. At the conclusion of the meeting it was announced that the board was prepared to continue distributing relief through the mayor’s depot for the next three weeks, subject to the same covering assistance to rural districts throughout the Otago hospital area, the chairman to be given power to act in the amount of the relief to bo provided. In effect this means that the board will not agree to a return to the original system of issuing chits to the unemployed. , It is understood that with this assistanco from the board, the mayor’s depot will be able to make adequate provision for the relief of workers and their families, WET WEATHER TIME Works Department: Men in the following groups who lost time on Monday, April 11, duo to wet weather, will be permitted to work off time so lost by reporting at the locations given below on Saturday, April 16, at 7.30 a.m. If necessary jobs will remain open for eight hours to complete time lost: —l2s, Queen s drive, at Russell street; 104, Wharf street, near French street; 533, Wharf street, near French street; 544, Wharf street, near French street; 145, Wharf street, near French street; 105, Woodhaugh street, at quarry; 119, Woodhaugh street, at Quarry; 146, Woodhaugh street, at quarry; 201, Woodhaugh street, at quarry; 203, Woodhaugh street, at quarry; 214, Woodhaugh street, at quarry; 128, Gardner street, off Elgin road. Men in any other groups working with the Works Department who have not been given an opportunity of making up time lost through inclement weather on Monday last may report for work at Queen’s drive , and Russell street, Wharf street, or Woodhaugh quarry at 7.30 a.m. on Saturday, April 16. WORK AT TAIERI Members of group 210 (laieri Rivei Trust) are notified that for work on Saturday, April 16, they will leave from the old Grand Picture Theatre by D.C.C. bus at 7.15 a.m., and from other places arranged. A CHINESE GIFT The St. Andrew street depot acknowledges with thanks the generosity of Hop On Wah, fruiterer, 38 George street, for his donation to the unemployment relief of one ton of potatoes and thirty sacks of cauliflowers and cabbages. NORTH-EAST VALLEY COHCERT In an endeavour to raise funds to provide fuel for the imemployed a concert is being given in the Millar Street Hall N.E.V., on Tuesday next. In addition to a varied programme pupils of Miss Lily Stevens and dancers from the Scottish Society will assist, ins mayor and mayoress will be present. ENTERTAINMENT IN BURNS HALL In Burns Hall on Wednesday evening next an entertainment is to be given under the auspices of the Relief Con> mittee of the Unemployed Workers Movement. Mr John Gilchrist will give an illustrated lecture on Wonders of the Microscope,’ and there is also to be a screening of ‘ The Vagabond, featuring Charlie Chaplin, Next Thursday a dance, also in aid of the relief fund, will be held m the Embassy Salon. MAYOR’S RELIEF FUND The mayor (Mr R. S. Black) acknowledges with thanks the receipt the following sums towards his relief of distress fund:— M.U.L0.0.F £25 Mrs C.
