FIRST IRON SHIP
TRIBUTE TO A PIONEER. The memory of the man who designed and built the first iron ship and was largely instrumental in opening up West Africa is to be honoured at special ceremonies in London and Liverpool on July 19, Ho was MacGregor Laird, who was the first to organise a trading expedition up the River Niger. It was thus, with another great pioneer Richard Lander, that' ho laid the foundations of British power in West Africa. July 19 will bo the 100th anniversary of tho setting out from Liverpool of the Niger expedition. Tho “White Man# Grave ” claimed all but nine of the fortyeight daring adventurers. Mr Laird promoted another expedition which was carried out without loss of life,Following this, the Government made contracts for a monthly service to various port# on the West Coast of Africa.
