AMATEUR ATHLETICS

PROTECTION ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of the Otago Amateur Athletic Club’s Protection Association was held in Mr E. S. Wilson’s board room last night,. Mr H. J. Duncan presiding over a well-attended meeting of delegates from the various athletic clubs. The following report was presented: — In submitting the annual report the committee is pleased to state that the association is successfully carrying out the work for which it was instituted. Affiliated clubs recognise the benefits to be derived by membership and the assistance the association gives them in collecting subscriptions. During the year 59 names were submitted to the association, and of these _22 settled with their clubs after receiving notice from the association, leaving 37 to be added to the defaulters’ list. During the year five of those already on the list have settled, and their names have been removed from the defaulters’ list. Secretaries of clubs are requested to peruse carefully the defaulters’ list and advise the secretary of the association if they know of any defaulter receiving the benefits of membership of any club, and steps will then be taken to debar such defaulters from receiving the privileges of membership of any club. Secretaries are also requested to see that the defaulters’ lists are placed in a prominent position in their club pavilions. Mr P. Vallis mentioned that a number of clubs connected with the various branches of sport was not affiliated with the association, and said he felt sure that if these clubs only recognised the benefits to be, derived by joining the association every club in Dunedin would join. It was the experience of all present that the association was of great help in getting members to pay up their subscriptions. Reference was made to one club that had sent in the names of 48 defaulters to the association. After these players had been written to by the Protection Association, advising them that unless they settled with their clubs their names would be placed on the defaulters’ list, 45 had settled with their club. It was resolved that the secretary circularise all clubs that were not members, pointing out the benefits to be derived by joining the association, and requesting them to join up. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows;—President, Mr A. Glengarry; committee—Messrs P. Yallis, R. Herd, W. Titchener, A. G. Valentine, V. Robinson, G. Silver; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. S. Wilson; hon. auditor, Mr 6. 6. Austin. The secretary submitted a . list of those who had been declared defanlters during the past year, and it was resolved that these names should be printed and distributed amongst the affiliated clubs. It was also resolved to write to clubs asking if they had the names of any further defaulters which they desired to add to the new list before it was printed.
