PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ SWIMMING

ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL SEVERAL RECORDS BROKEN Invariably one of the most enjoyable swimming fixtures of the year is the Otago State primary schools’ championships, and this year’s carnival, the heats of which were decided at the Municipal Baths last night, proved no exception. As usual at this meeting the baths were packed by a cheering crowd of children, while parents and other interested spectators were present in force. Sixteen schools, representing some 300 entries, participated, and the performances generally were well up to the high standard that has been set in recent years. Four existing _ records were broken during the _ evening and one equalled* and indications are that fresh figures null be established in several events to-night, when the finals will ho decided.

Swimming for Albany Street, S. Jarvis, the New Zealand junior boys’ 100yds and 220yds champion, won. his heat of 33 l-3yds championship (boys under 14) in 20sec, which bettered by 4-ssec the record established by Reg. Geddes in 1928, and as Jarvis had nearly half a lap to spare the excellence of his effort may be gauged. His sister, Miss 11. Jarvis, who was also representing Albany Street, equalled the record of Bsec for the girls’ under 12 width, established by Miss N. Olds three years ago. The same girl won a heat of the 25yds under 13 in 18 l-ssec, and Miss J. Ramsay won in 18sec, a well-contested final being indicated. Most impressive were the efforts of another Albany Street girl, Miss O. Buckland, who broke two records. She won her heat of the 33 l-3yds under 14 in 25 2-ssec, which lowered by l-ssec a record that has stood since _ 1926, and also put up another record in the 25yds breast stroke championship, girls under 14. Swimming with a most rhythmical and well-balanced stroke, she covered the distance in 21 2-ssec, which was 3-ssec faster than Miss I. Williams’s record of last year. In another heat Miss Z. Wilson, representing St. Clair, swam well to win in 22 l-ssec, only l-ssec outside the previous record.

In the 25yds championship (boys under 12) D, Tuckwell, a promising Arthur Street competitor, won his heat in the good time of 16 3-ssec, and W. W. Buckland, of Albany Street, won in 17 2-ssec. Arthur Street hung up record figures in tho 133 l-3yds mixed relay under 14, this school’s time in tho heat being Irain 43 2-ssec, 3sec better than Albany Street’s record of last year. Roy Geddes, of Albany Street, a younger brother of the well-known intermediate champion Reg. Geddes, won a heat of the 25yds breast stroke (boys under 12) in 24sec, and of the 25yds free style (under 11) in 17 4-sscc, W. Williams (Normal) registering 18sec in his heat, so that another close final should ensue.

An exhibition of life saving was given during the evening by members of the Training College Swimming and Life Saving Club, under the instructorship of Mr A. M. Rush, and this was much appreciated by the spectators.

■ A big programme was put through in well under two hours, the organisation being a tribute to the efforts of the president of the Schools’ Sports Association (Mr A. Hanna), the superintendent, Mr H. D. Morgan (chairman of the Schools’ Swimming Committee), the secretary (Mr R. S. Harrison), and the other energetic officials who assisted. Messrs I). Forsyth and A. M. Rush were the starters and Mr W. Wallace the announcer. In addition to the finals to-night, exhibitions of swimming are to be given by Reg. Geddes and Miss Maxine Mathieson, and W. J. Jarvis will make an attempt on the New Zealarid 50yds record. Results:— ' 133 1-3 YARDS MIXED RELAY (under 14), Record, Imin 46 2-ssec, Albany Street, 1931.
