THE PERPETUAL FLOWERING CARNATION
Few flowers are so much appreciated or so useful for decorative purposes as perpetual flowering carnations. The plants can be had in bloom during the whole year with ordinary care, but.it is chiefly during the winter mouths that they are most valued. They are among the most economical of plants for growing in a greenhouse, owing to the little heat that is necessary for them; consequently they are ideal flowers for the amateur with small means. When setting out plants, and alter growth has advanced some inches, say, to about five pairs of leaves, the tips should be taken out to encourage side growths. Some plants break naturally, while others have a tendency to run up for a while. Carnations Jove a limy soil, and wood ashes may be used with advantage. As side branches develop, the growths should all be pinched out again to induce plenty of growths for blooms. Otherwise the plants will provide so few blooms that they will not bo found to be a payable proposition.
