NOTES ON THE EVENTS

[By St. Cuaiu.]

The attendance at Waimate was good, and included a large number of visitors, but they were more interested in the racing than in the totalisator, and, despite the good fields, only £5,383 passed through the machine, as against £8,390 10s last year, £9,578 10s in 1930, and £10,569 10s in 1929. The track was in first-class order, but not so fast as last year. , Mr J. H. Tompkins was fairly successful as starter. Quite a number of the horses engaged had more important engagements at Easter, and the racing of Ramo, Assemble, Meadow Lark, and Pakiterc will bring them into favour in their respective engagements.

The field for the Studholmo Higbweight Handicap was made a poor one by the withdrawal of Shortly, Merry Peel, and Night Flier, and Niggerbcad, heavily bandaged in front (£168), was entrusted with more than half the investments in a poor pool. Appeal whipped round as the barrier rose, and Tarquinius led the favourite to the far turn at a slow pace. Then Niggerhead went to the front and was not afterwards headed, winning very easily by a couple of lengths from Tarquinius, who beat Royal I imond by a similar margin. Shortly, who figured on the card as an acceptor, died on Sunday as the result of a dose of turpentine.

Metal Box (£2l7*) was made an odds-on chance in the Trial Plate, with Denise (£145) the only other starter seriously fancied. Song Box and Metal Bird led out from Denise, and approaching the far turn the latter ran up and joined Song Box. This pair led the favourite and Fine Weather across the top, with Night Guard next. Approaching the straight Fine Weather dropped back as if interfered with. Song Box and Deniso were still in charge turning for home, but once in the straight Phar Lap’s brother put in a good run, which carried him to the front opposite tho lawn stand, and he beat the favourite home by a long neck. Song Box was only a head away third, and Denise and Silver Sight next.

Raino (£IB2J) and Black Duke f£l69J) were the best fancied in the Waimato Cup, and Gold Pit (£I2SJ) was much better backed than Ranelagh (£S2A). Red Racer, Ranelagh, and Gold Pit w'ere the smartest to begin, but racing past the grand stand Gold Pit was in charge from Red Racer, Night Effort, and Ranelagh, with Black Duke covering some extra ground as the field turned out of the straight. _ There was no change in the leading division until approaching the far turn, where Gold Pit retired in favour of Red Racer, with Ranelagh, Night Effort, and Ramo racing next. They raced across the top in this order, and approaching the home turn Ranelagh took charge and was followed into the straight by Ramo, Night Effort, and Gold Pit. At the distance Ranelagh was well clear, and looked all over a winner, but Ramo finished with a well-timed run and beat him to the post by a long neck. Night Effort, two length away, was third, a head in front of Red Racer, and Minerval and Black Duke were next. Gold Pit, who was short of work owing to having bruised one of her feet, stopped badly over the last furlong, and Full Feather ran one of his bad races.

Only Margaret Bingen (£288), a halfsister to Waitaki Girl and full sister to Stanley Bingen, and Auspicious (£152)) were tho only two backed in the Morven Harness Trot, the former at a short odds-on price. The favourite nearly fell and broke badly at tho end of two furlongs, and Irish Bingen and Sun Brown set the pace for nearly a mile. Then Almont Cling, the backmarker, took a hand, but his effort was short-lived, and Sun Brown and Erin’s Own led round the far turn and across the top. Sun Brown and Auspicious both broke at tho top of tho straight, and the favourite, with a fast run, finished right under the judge’s box to beat Erin’s Own by a length, with Dolly Huon three lengths away third and" Evening Sun next.

Master Anomaly (£156)) was much better backed than Assemble (£ll2) f for tho President’s Handicap. Hot Tea led the favourite, who wms inclined to hang out on the turns, into the straight from True Shaft and Meadow Lark. Assemble, who was racing half a dozen lengths behind the field across the top, moved up quickly directly the home run was reached. Both True Shaft and Meadow Lark had Hot lea and Master Anomaly’s measure hallway down tho straight, then Assemble put in a wonderful final run, and beat them both by half a length. True Shalt was a head in front of Meadow Lark, who is rioarly back to his best form.

Red Royal (£218) was made a much better favourite than cither Adult (£ls9|) or Pharaoh (£129) in the l\aitangi Hack Handicap. He at once went to the front, and after going a couple of furlongs was four lengths clear of Crush, with another broak_ of the same distance to Adult and Night Parade. Crash closed up the gap racing across tho top, and was with the favourite when heads were turned for home. They raced down tho straight together well clear, and in the last stride Crash got a half-head verdict. Royal Limond was two lengths away third, and Pharaoh, Adult, and Night Parade were next. , * , Red Spur (£2oo*) was much better fancied than either Margaret Bingen (penalised 36yds, £148) or Auspicious (£131) in tho Hook Handicap, and after following Great Seaman for oyer a mile, had no difficulty in running past and boating him homo by four lengths. With throe furlongs to go, Margaret Bingen; who went away badly, looked dangerous in third place, but she failed to stay on, and Evening Sun finished two lengths away third, and Holly Huon, was a good fourth. * * # * Rational 11. (£224), Princess Argosy (£l9s*), and Night Effort (£170) were tho well-fancied candidates in the Stewards’ Handicap. Hot Tea led out from Night Effort and Pakitore, and once the back stretch was reached the latter shot to tho front and led Hot Tea, Night Effort, and the favourite. Pakitere was four lengths clear of Rational 11. as they raced across the top, and the

latter made a good attempt to catch tho Waslul yko-trained marc in tho* run home, but failed by a short neck. Hot Tea was four lengths off third, with Princess Argosy, Night Effort, and Pharaoh nest.
