FINANCE COMMITTEE. Dr Newlands moved that the following clause of the Finance Committee be referred back to the committee:— “ Employees over retiring age.—lntimation bo sent to the following officers who have reached retiring age that their services will bo terminated with the board from September 30, 1932, and they bo placed on superannuation—viz.—Alexander Bagley, dispenser; Richard Neal, fireman; Mr W. D. Mackie, gardener; Miss C. E. D. Nosworthy, sub-matron; Miss Christina Smart, housemaid; Mrs Mason, cook, Tapanui Hospital; W. Yates, laundryman.” Dr Newlands said that there was a difference of opinion as to the wisdom of retiring people. They had to be replaced by others who would draw nearly the same salary as the people who were retiring received. The actual saving to the community was, therefore, nil—sometimes less than nil. Another point was that some of their servants were still perfectly competent to carry out their duties. _ Miss Runciman seconded the amendment. In the brief discussion which followed Mr Dove pointed out that the board was the custodian of the people’s money. They had a superannuation scheme, and why not enforce it properly? The amendment was lost, only Dr Newlands, Miss Runciman, and tho chairman voting for it. TENDERS. The tender of Messrs A. and T. Burt of £736 5s for hot water calorifiers for tiie Dunedin Hospital was accepted. Tho tender of Messrs Donald Stuart Ltd. of £2O 2s for repairs to the main roof of the Dunedin Hospital was accepted.
