DUNEDIN FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING Yesterday’s meeting of the Dunedin Fire Board was attended by the chairman (Mr J. Wilson). Messrs S. B. Macdonald, J. L. Salmond, W. A. Scott, F. T. Anderson, H. A. IF Brabant, and F. Wilkinson. It was reported that the accounts amounting to £2,094 4s 5d had been passed for payment. The City fingineor wrote advising that the laying of the following water mains had now been completed:— Valpy street, Sin main replaced by Gin (3 fire plugs); Norfolk street, Sin main replaced by Gin (12 fire plugs); Hobson street, Sin main replaced by •tin (2 fire plugs); Sandringham street, Sin main replaced by lift (S fire plugs); Onslow street, Sin main replaced by 4in (4 fire plugs) ; Beach street, 9 chains of Sin main replaced by 4in (2 fire plugs); Cliff’s road, 41 chains of Sin main and service pipe replaced by 4in (10 fire plugs).—lt was considered that the improvements, which had needed attention for some time, were very satisfactory. lii his report Superintendent J. J. Salmon stated that the month of February had been tho quietest experienced for a lengthy period, the total number of calls being 17, of which 9 were false alarms, 5 being malicious and four automatic. Two calls were to chimney fires, 2 to rubbish and bush, and 4 to fires. The four fires attended wore of a minor nature, and occurred in sample rooms, a dwelling, a motor vehicle, and tar in yard caught alight. VTho causes of files were: — Fused motor, 1; defective chimney, 1; tar overheating, 1; unknown, 1. The staff had been engaged in routine work and preparing for tho equipment of the Green Island engine house, arrangements for which were well advanced. The pressure at the various stations had been :—Central—9 a.in. ]oolb, 9 p.m. 1401 b; South Dunedin, 801 b and 1301 b; Roslyn, 1201 b and 1251 b. The ambulance transported seventy-four patients and travelled 840 miles. The report was adopted. The estimated expenditure for the year ended March 31, 1933, was approved. The Chairman mentioned that the estimate of £13,000 was £2,000 lower than the 1931 expenditure, or £3,000 below that for 1930. ANNUAL MEETING. At the conclusion of the monthly meeting tho twenty-fifth annual meeting of the board was hold. Mr J. Wilson was re-elected chairman for the ensuing term. Votes of thanks to Superintendent Salmon, his staff, and the secretary (Mr J. T. Hamann) were carried.
