Mr Chamberlain’s amendment to include on the free list animal hair, esparto grass, metallic ores, pearls, semiprecious stones, platinum, whale products produced by British concerns, coal, coke, manufactured fuel, potassium, fertiliser salts, and maize was adopted. The Labourites, supported by some Liberals, sought to place on the free list all human foodstuffs, but Ministerialists replied that a wide range of foodstuffs,' comprising all the staple articles of diet, was already %n the free list. After a long debate the amendment ,was defeated by 308 to 71. The committee stage was concluded jnth. the aid of the guillotine.
