NOTES ON THE RACING

[By St. Claie.]

Though the morning was wet the rain cleared off before midday, and the sun broke through, helping to dry up the track, and aided by a strong wind later on in the afternoon the course was in good order towards the end of the meeting. The attendance was good for an “ off ” day, and the gate receipts were £126, as compared with £l5O 16s last year, the decrease for the .meeting being £7l 13s 6d from this source. The betting was much better than expected, £5,830 10s being handled, as against £6,446 10s on the same day last year, making the total for the meeting £ll,723 10s, as compared with £14,408 in 1931, £24,945 in 1930, and £19,056 in 1929. The racing was again interesting and backers were again well on the mark with their selections. The starting by Mr M'lvor was right up to his best standard, and the general management' of the meeting was excellent. SILVER SALVER AT LAST. (Though Thornton was meeting Silver Salver (by Tea Tray—Arch Lassie), on 161 b worse terms in the Mataura Highweight and Hack Handicap than on the previous day the former was the better favourite by £8 10s in a pool of only £367, with the locally-trained Spanish Maid the best backed of the others. Thornton led Rombeau and Silver Salver through the straight, but after passing the six furlong post Silver Salver ran up to the favourite-and they were together, four lengths clear of Spanish Maid and Rombeau until well into the straight. Inside the distance post Thornton was in trouble, and Silver Salver beat her home comfortably by two lengths. Rombeau was three lengths further back. third, and Spanish Maid, who was very sore, next. EASY FOR TEA PARTY. Tea Party, by Tea Tray—Eager Eyes (£267), Leading Boy/;(£86$), Palada (£6Bs). and Broughshane (£6B) were the best fancied in the Hokonui Hack Handicap, the former being at a short odds-on price. Leading Boy was started from the “ pen.” Tea Party led out from Milliner and Miss Redowa, but after going a couple of furlongs Broughshane ran up into second place and he and Milliner followed the favourite round the far turn. Racing across the top Jack-a-Dandy moved up and with Broughshane was a couple of lengths behind Tea Party as they turned for home. Tea Party was alii ays going comfortably in the run to the post, and beat her stable mate, Jack-a-Dandy by a length. Traylayah was half a length away third, a similar distance in front of Leading Boy,, who did not get a clear run in the straight. Palada and Broughshane were next. An inquiry was held by the Judicial Committee into alleged interference by

Milliner with Miss . Kodowa in the Hokonui Hack Handicap. After hear ing the evidence of the riders concerned the committee decided that the evidence did not warrant any action being taken. THE SMUGGLER SCORES WELL. In a one-dividend field in the President’s Handicap The Smuggler, by Balboa—-Miss FJeetham (£2oG), was sent out at an odds-on price, with only Inevitable (£186) of the others fancied. Money Mine led Inevitable, who was pulling hard, and tho favourite for nalt a mile, then Inevitable went to the front and Tho Smuggler followed him to tho home turn. Inevitable was m trouble once the straight was. entered, and The Smuggler beat him homo easily by a length. Red Sea was on y half a length off third, and Money Mine a poor fourth. Red Sea’s performance under the steadier of 9st 121 b was a meritorious one, and shows this maro to be very well at present. WAR PAINT MAKES AMENDS. Winning 1 Wave (£1841), War Paint (by Man o’ War-May r lracoy £176), Lady Direct (£156), Deste (£9O), and Blue Mountain (£B6). were the best fancied candidates in the Progressive Harness Trot. Winning Wave and Blue Mountain again stood on their marks, and Lady Direct broke some gear. Erin’s Star and Grey Girl led John Appear, Gracile, and. Lady Direct for nearly a mile, then War Paint, who had made up her handicap very steadily, took charge and was not afterwards headed, winning easing up by six lengths from Erin’s Fair, who beat John Appear by two lengths. Grey Girl, Highland King, and Lady Direct were next. Erin Chimes unseated his driver soon after the start. MY COUNCIL IMPROVES. Starmish (£149), Reminder (£133), Red Sunset (£131), and My Council (£9ls), were the popular fancies in the Trial Handicap.' The favourite was badly left with Huida at the start. My Council jumped out very smartly and led Reminder and Glenham Lark to the far turn, then Reminder ran to. the front and was followed into the straight by My Council and Glenham Lark. In the i;un to tile post My Council finished on well and beat Reminder by half a length. Red Sunset, who was slow over the first three furlongs, put in a good run to finish only half a length further baqk third. First Song, Glenham Lark, and Anne Shakespeare were nest. FIRST MONEY’S GIFT. First Money (£27o*), Crubenmore (£148), Red Boa (£73); and Fair Exchange (£sls), were the best backed in the Borough Handicap. After a long delay at the barrier which placed First Money and Fair Exchange in the “pen,” a good start was made. Ace of Hearts led Crubenmore and" the favourite, to the far turn, then Crubenmore Tyent on from; First Money, who caught her. at the' entrance to the straight. In the run home First Money scored easily by two lengths from Royal Duke, who finished fast and beat Crubenmore for second money by a length and a-half. Captivate and Fair Exchange were next. A DEAD HEAT. The bracketed pair Dark Voyage and Single Lee Young Jess(£l23), Sea Wave (£103), Anthum (by Harold Direct—hack mare, £9Bs), and Lady Voisin (£93s), were the best fancied in the Telegraph Saddle Trot. Anthum began the fastest of the horses on tho limit, and led Dark Voyage, Chiming Wave, and Dusky over the first halfmile. Going along the back Anthum was three lengths clear of Dark Voyage, with Young Jess and Dusky next. Dark Voyage dropped out facing across the top and Anthum led Dusky arid Young Jess into the straight. Anthum tired badly in the run home, and Dusky, just got up in time to make a dead heat with the Central Otago-trained mare. Erin’s' Chief was four lengths away third, and followed by Man o’ Franz, Chiming Wave, and Lady Voisin. Dusky is by Erin’s King from Lady Agnes, and locally trained. A GOOD FINISH. Consono (£298), Yotmg Sentinel (£169), Leading Boy (£ls9s), and My Council (who'had'a 61b penalty, £l3Bs) were the fancied starters in the Autumn Hack " race. My. Council ' led Young Sentinel and Sailing Home over the first two furlongs, then Young Sentinel headed My Council, the pair being nearly four lengths clear of Steeton and Sailing Home, who were racing together. Leading Boy began to move up racing round the far turn and across the top, and turning "into the straight Young Sentinel and Steeton were just in front of him. At the distance these three were each being hard ridden, and halfway" to the ' post' Corisorio joined them. In tho best finish of the meeting Leading Boy scored by a short neck from Consono, who beat Steeton by a head, and Young Sentinel was less than half a length away fourth, the other pair finishing well back.
