MASTER PAINTERS
TO-DAY'S CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS DISCUSSION ON THE LIENS ACT Practically the whole of the discussion at the annual conference of the New Zealand Federation of Master Painters and Decorators continued this morning was in relation to certain proposals of the Liens Act, which would give sub-contractors greater protection than is the case at the present ime. A sub-committee had previously been appointed at the conference to consider the matter, and it reported that it had considered several proposals such as compulsory attachment to liens and automatic attachment prior to the commencement of the job, following the American system, but it recommended a scheme by which the principle of trusteeship embodied in the Law Practitioners’ Act should be included in the Liens Act to apply to the relationship between the principal contractor and the various, sub-contractors. The proposals were referred to the executive to co-operate with the Master Plumbers’ Federation, the electrical contractors, iron masters, and other sub-contracting organisations with a view to seeking an amendment to the Act. , _ „ T Messrs J. S. Douglas and T. W. Knox, representing the New Zealand Plumbers’ Federation, were present at the discussion, and it was generally urged that, in view of the fact that the Act had now been practically unaltered for the past thirty years, and of the conditions pertaining in the industry tq-day, some amendment was essential.
The remainder of the morning was devoted to the presentation of a paper by Mr J. D. Turner on problems to he faced by the federation in the near future, and a long and interesting discussion ensued on technical matters in relation to the composition and manufacture of paints.
