PICTURE THEATRES
REGENT For dramatic entertainment of a high order ‘ The Lawyer’s Secret ’ is a picture well worth seeing. It has had a successful run at the Regent since last Friday, and it will be finally presented to-night. The unusually interesting plot is admirably played by such artists as Clive Brook, Richard Aden, Charles Rogers, Fay Wray, and Jean Arthur. Supporting ‘The Lawyer’s Secret ’ are some really fine short subjects , ST. JAMES Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell will bid farewell to Dunedin in the meantime when ‘ Merely Mary Ann ’ concludes at the St. James to-night, '’ins dainty romance has pleased thousands during .the past two weeks, and it is worth recommending to those who enjoy this type of entertainment. Splendid featurettes are also screened, including ‘That’s Cricfket.’ EMPIRE Charles Bickford and ■ Rose i.obart have the leads in ‘ East of Borneo,’ the novel' jungle tale, which has been a popular attraction at the Empire this week. It .closes to-night, This entertaining film is particularly well supported by an educational cricket picture and" other “ shorts,” whilst Mr Paul T. Cullen presides at the organ. STRAND Zane Grey’s ‘Riders of the Purpm Sage ’ will be csreened for the last time at the Strand to-night. Ceorge O’Brien and Marguerite Churchill are excellent in the principal parts, and no better villain than Noah Beery could be found for the author’s bad-man character. This is a lively and pleasing Western. It is well supported. OCTAGON Nancy Carroll in . ‘ Laughter ’ and Richard Dix in ‘ Secret Six ’ are the Octagon’s current attractions. The former is about a chorus girl who marries a wealthy and elderly peer. She realises her mistake too late, and a secret romance makes up the bulk of the plot. Dix has another of his powerful roles in ‘Secret Service,’ a story of the American Civil War. KING EDWARD Solving a complicated mystery with Sherlock Holmes makes particularly thrilling and interesting entertainment in ‘ The Sleeping Cardinal ’ at the King Edward. This is a fine British production, featuring Arthur Wontner as Holmes and lan Fleming as Dr Watson.
