SERIOUS FIGHTING CONTINUES
CHINESE RETREAT TO RAILWAY STATION JAPANESE PREPARING TO ATTACK AT DAWN SHANGHAI, January 28. (Received January 29, at 12.30 p.m.) At 4 o’clock this morning serious fighting was continuing at Chapei, while a huge fire is rapidly spreading throughout the whole district. It is estimated that over 1,200 Chinese houses and buildings have been destroyed. After a fairly stubborn resistance the Chinese troops commenced to retire before steady pressure as the Japanese brought reinforcements from the naval vessels. The Chinese forces have now retreated to the railway station, which the Japanese are preparing to attack at daylight. Three Japanese aefoplanes are now Hying over Shanghai, despite the darkness, preparatory to making an attack on tho Chinese forces at the station, which are continuing to fight, and have brought field p’xes into action. Thus far the International Settlement is unharmed, though stray bullets are dropping in areas in Hhe vicinity of the boundaries.
