HIBERNIAN CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING There was a large attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Hibernian Social and Debating Club. The President (Mr A. Gillick) presided and welcomed his lordship the bishop and Rev. Father Collins, Adm. Reviewing the past year, with all its stress and anxieties, he trusted the present one would show the silver lining indicative of returning happiness and prosperity for all in the years to come. Referring to the affairs of tho club, he again expressed' the deep appreciation or members of the consistent interest taken by his lordship the bishop and clergy in their activities and of the valued help so generously _ given by participation from time to time in the club’s syllabus. ’ j The half-yearly report and statement of accounts were read, and on the motion of the President, who eulogised the good work of the secretary (Mr W. E. Dawkins), were adopted. Enlarging on the capable manner in which the secretarial duties had been performed, the President said the records of the secretaries .throughout the life of the club were something to be proud of and their keen interest and self-sacrificing industry an example to all members. . In seconding the motion, Mr F. G. Brown endorsed all that had been said regarding the good work of the secretary. Mr R. A. King spoke of the excellent work done by the club and the great help afforded it by the principal of the Christian Brothers’ High School towards its membership, and congratulated the committee on the satisfactory manner in which the affairs of the club had been managed, enabling it to emerge with a credit balance on the half-year’s operations. In joining in the congratulations, Mr J. Toner said much of the success attained in the activities of the club could be attributed to the president, who had spared neither time nor energy in its pursuits. Before vacating the chair prior to the election of office-bearers, the President thanked all who had been associated with him during _ the past term, especially the vice-president (Mr J. P. Dolan), who, unfortunately for the club, was under transfer to Wellington. * Office-bearers were then elected as follow President, Mr A, Gillick (reelected) ; vice-president, Mr W. E. Dawkins; secretary, Mr V. J. Browne; assistant-secretary, Mr L. Fraser; treasurer, Mr T. Boyle (re-elected); auditor, Mr F. R. Thompson; committee—Messrs B. Quelch, J. O’Reilly, F. G. Brown, P. M'Elevey, V. Cahill, G. Gibb, G. O’Connell, and J. P. Lauren. His Lordship the Bishop said it afforded him, as it always did, r great pleasure to be present on such an important occasion in connection with the club. In congratulating the new executive just elected to office, the Bishop said it would bo expected of the members to emulate the zeal and enthusiasm of those they were succeeding in office. He complimented the secretary on the competent report ho had furnished, and said how interesting it was to find members generally so willing to help in the activities of the club, led as they were by an excellent president, whose zeal and example would still be an inspiration, seeing he had been re-elected to that position. , Rev. Father Collins tendered Ins congratulations on the continued success manifested by the club and to the members On the victories they had achieved in interclub and other contests. His best wishes were for many more years of success in a field that offered such great advantages to boys leaving school and young men who would realise the benefits derivable from social intercourse and mutual improvement m a Catholic atmosphere.
