MR F. JONES, M.P., HONOURED

COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL The Coronation Hall (St. Kilda) was filled to capacity last evening when Mr F. Jones, M.P., Was honoured by a complimentary social under the auspices of tho 1931 Election Campaign Committee of the South Dunedin branch of the Labour Party. The Rev. Percy Paris officiated as chairman, and also on the platform were Mrs Jones, Mrs M. Don secretary of tho committee and of the branch), Mr and Mrs P. Neilson, and Mr J. Gilchrist. A very enjoyable evening was spent by a gathering numbering almost 700, tho programme consisting of several concert items, after which supper was served, tho iloor then being cleared for dancing, which was continued until a late hour. During the .concert portion if the programme Mr Jones took tho opportunity of thanking tho largo number of people who assisted him so well, and who made possible Ins success m the recent parliamentary elections. Ho said that he would also like to take tin opportunity of bringing under the notice of those present ono who was largely responsible for the splendid Labour victory which had been achieved—namely, tho organising secretary, Mrs M. Don. As an expression of appreciation of tho services rendered by Mrs Don in the election campaign, Mr Jones, on behalf of the committee members and supporters of the party, presented her with a dressing table set inscribed in gold, Tho recipient briefly replied thanking those who had paid such a tribute to her efforts on behalf of the Labour Party. Mrs Don later presented Mrs Jones with a very pretty bouquet of roses and carnations, anil another pleasant ceremony was performed, at the conclusion of the concert prowhen the Rev. Mr Paris, on behalf of the committee and supporters of the party, presented Air Jones with an inscribed attache case.

Mr Paris, in paying a tribute to Mr Jones, said that prior to the election campaign ho had made several inquiries concerning Mr Jones, and that from every quarter came nothing but praise for him. both as a man and as a fitting parliamentary representative. The best possible summary of Mr Jones’s character, he said, was contained in tho phrase “ a white man,” and he was sure that everyone would agree with him in saying that. Mr Jones, in replying on behalf of his wife and himself, said that he would do all in his power to live up to the reputation winch Mr Paris had given him, and that he would always continue to work ?n the interests of the workers.

'Those who assisted by contributing items to the programme were Messrs Simpson, C. Abbott, Paul Reno, and R. Griffiths, and Misses Denford, Hawley, Milne, and Paton. The dance music was supplied by tho Black Cat Orchestra, Miss May Allen acting as accompanist.
