SINGLES CHAMPION BEATEN BY CANTERBURY COLT TO-DAY'S GAMES [Pee United Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, January 28. The national singles champion, Stedman, of Auckland, was decisively defeated this morning at the New Zealand tennis championships by the Canterbury colt Barnett, who last week attracted much attention by successive victories in the Wilding Shield matches. Although tho champion played beautiful shots, ho was far too erratic ot hold Barnett, who was as steady as ever and coolly returned all Stcdman’s powerful drives. Stedman did not attempt to go in to the net. The match was soon over, and never looked like being closely contested. A second national champion was eliminated when Mrs Dykes (Auckland) was beaten by Miss Hall, who ranked third in the New South Wales team, with the result that tho four Australians will contest the semi-finals, Miss Hartigan having defeated Miss Nicholls (Wellington), who was champion in 1929. Mrs Dykes took only four games from tho visitor, who won, 6-4, 6-0; but Miss Nicholls made a close game of it. Don France (Wellington) was defeated by Angas after a stern contest, in which the Wellingtonian made his fight too late. He played poorly in the first two sets, missing easy shots, and double-faulting, but got on his game in the third set. Angas, in the fourth, did all the attacking and won tho match. Results;—
