BRILLIANT AUCKLANDER [From Oor Own Reporter.] The New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships concluded in drizzling rain, accompanied by wind. After a markedly successful opening the Wellington Centre was decidedly unfortunate, as otherwise the meeting was a great success. Some really brilliant performances were recorded, and the 440 yards intermediate boys’ championship was agreed to be one of the most thrilling witnessed at a New Zealand championship. Otago was deprived of the War Memorial Shield by Auckland, but not without a great struggle, Otago’s early lead was gradually overhauled by Auckland, who secured 6J points, Otago being runners-up with five wins. *lt was unfortunate that Otago was pot represented in the intermediate girls’ division, where Auckland had two wins. The brilliant Aucklander, Noel Crump, has a rather unusual stroke. He was an outstanding competitor, winning the furlong in 2min 37 2-ssec, the 100 in 60 2-ssec, dead heating the 440 yards championship in 6min 51 3-ssec. He was fully extended in the 100 yards by the Otago representatives, Walter Jarvis and Reg. Geddes, both of whom swam well. Jarvis went a most impressive race, and Ted Annand, a prominent Canterbury official, who has been attending championship meetings for nearly a quarter of a century, said that Jarvis was one of the most promising swimmers in his experience, with a great future as a sprinter. Geddes showed much better form than at Ashburton last year, but disappointed in the final of the 440. This race was a magnificent contest between Crump and Bullivant, sheer grit keeping the Aucklander with Bullivant over the final stages. There were not two strokes between them at any part of the distance, the judges ceing unable to separate them at the finish. The referee ordered a reswim, but neiflier was prepared to swim again. Some doubt exists as to whether both can share the title. Each was credited with half a point for the shield. This was not the only close finish. The junior boys’ and girls’ divisions provided their share. Sid. Jarvis worthily upheld Otago’s prestige, showing out as one of the most naturally gifted swimmers at the meeting. He has a good style and one experienced judge stated that with care he may develop into a wonderful _ distance swimmer. He showed the right temperament in winning the 100yds, his second title, and finishing gallantly after being behind in t’ e early stages. Miss Edna Rainey collected a point for Auckland by turning the tables on Miss Rhoda Low (Canterbury) in the junior girls’ 50yds in 32 4-ssec. Miss

Intermediate and Junior Championships

Auckland Wins the Shield

Winnie' Newall was third. The Otago girl did not reproduce her best form, but Miss Gwen Rix put up a great' battle in the 50yds junior girls’ breaststroke championship, in which Miss C. Waters (Auckland) beat her by barely a touch in slow time. Miss N. Ludlow annexed the furling intermediate girls’ event for Auckland in the good time of 3min Isec. Auckland also carried off first and second places in the intermediate girls’ 75yds breast-stroke championship, Miss J." Webster equalling the existing record (63sec), though recently she did 61 l-sseo at Auckland,, which has not yet been passed. The intermediate boys’ diving championship for the fifth successive time went to Otago, P. E. Mathieson giving a.good all round display to beat G. Kirkley (Hawke’s Bay). The Otago boy’s superiority lay in post and voluntaries.

A feature _ of the meeting was the number of title-holders competing who suffered defeat. Otago secured five firsts, three seconds, and five thirds. AFTERNOON SESSION Two withdrawals from the 100yds ( intermediate boys’ championship made it possible for this race to be swum straighivout, and, as expected, it proved one of the most thrilling races of the meeting, with little to choose between all five competitors. As showing what sort of race it was, last year’s champion, P, H. M'Grath, was unable to stay the pace set and finished out of a place. The pace was on from the start, and Reg. Geddes turned a shade ahead of Noel Crump at the end of a lap in 18sec, but W. J. Jarvis was moving easily, only inches back. Geddes maintained his lead over the second lap, but Jarvis lost a little ground by fouling the ropes. Geddes lost on the last turn, and Crump gained a very slight advantage. It was here that Jarvis came prominently into the picture, and swimming brilliantly the last length, pushed Crump every inch of the way, the Aucklander winning by less than a yard in 60 2-ssec. Jarvis caught Geddes over the last 10yds to beat him for second place by a touch. M'Grath was fourth. The 50yds junior girls’ championship saw both heats won in the good time of 33sec. Swimming a much better race than on Friday, Miss Winnie Newall got away splendidly and led slightly from Miss Rhoda Low over the first lap. Miss Low turned inches to the good in 20 4-ssec, but Miss Newall pushed hey to the finish, Miss Low winning by half a yard, Miss J. Robertson a yard back third.. The second heat was Miss Edna Rainey’s race all the way, the Auckland girl beating Miss J. Walls by a yard, Miss B, Brown (Wellington) being the only other starter. The 100yds junior boys’ championship found Otago occupying first place in both heats. In winning the first heat Sid. Jarvis swam like a veteran and incidentally registered the fastest time he has yet done. M. Hopping had a great duel with Jarvis, Hopping turning half a yard to the good at the end of the first lap in 20 2-ssec. Hopping held a slight advantage over the second lap, but Jarvis got a great turn, 'and sprinting strongly won by half a ydrd in 72sec. J, Barry swam an easy race in the second heat and turned by a yard at the end of a lap in 24 4-ssec. J. Pascoe stuck with him over the second lap, but Barry forged ahead in the third lap and won by ,3yds in 75sec. The 440yds intermediate boys’ championship resulted in the title holder, M. Redman (Hawke’s Bay), failing to qualify. The first heat resulted in an exciting race between Noel Crump and R. Watkins, the Auckland boy swiming very smoothly to leave 100yds behind in 755ec, 4 Watkins being almost in line. There was nothing between the pair over the rest of the distance, but with a lap and a-half to go Crump sprinted. Watkins responded well, and in a great finish Crump won by a touch in 6min 7 2-ssec—7sec faster than Redman’s winning time last year. The first 100yds of the second heat was swum at a much faster clip than the first heat. C. Bullivant, who was second at Ashburton last year, touched in 72 l-ssec, just ahead of Reg. Geddes, who, was moving very freely despite the fact that he had had a hard 100 not long before. M. Redman was practically with Geddes, but Bullivant was ploughing along with a good steady stroke,, and drew away over the last 200yds to win., by 6yds. Geddes and Redman were almost on terms at the last turn, but Geddes beat the Hawke’s Bay boy for second place by a fighting finish with a yard to spare. _ The time was 6min 1 4-ssec, 3 l-ssec inside the standard, EVENING SESSION The 50yds” junior girls’ breast-stroke drew only three starters, but it was one of the best contested races of the evening. Misses G. Rix, C. Waters, and P. Broad got away to a good start and were together practically the whole of the first lap. Misses Rix and Waters turned simultaneously, but the Otago girl lost on the turn and a most exciting finish saw Miss Waters beat Miss Rix by barely a touch. Miss P. Broad was a foot back third. Time, 47sec. The 220yds intermediate girls’ championship gave Auckland a point lead over Otago. Miss Shona Campbell, wljo was second to Miss Maxine Mathieson last year, was not in the picture, withdrawing in the fourth lap after swallowing some water. Miss P. Sporle led from the start, but Miss W. Ludlow was only a touch behind at the end of 100yds in 75 4-ssec. Miss Ludlow took command over the last _ 50yds, drawing away to win by 4yds in 3min Isec—ssec under the standard.

The 75yds intermediate girls’ breaststroke championship saw another champion dethroned. Miss D. Bowman, who established a record last year, followed Miss J. Webster all the way. Miss Webster swam a good race, leading by 4ft at the end of a lap. Miss Bowman reduced the gap over the last 15yds, but her team mate won by a yard in 63sec, equalling the existing record. Miss V. Melton was a yard back third. The 100yds junior boys found Sid. Jarvis succeeding to the crown previously worn by Ins brother. The Otago

youngster showed rare 1 generalship, allowing M. Hopping to make the pace for a lap and a-half, and, putting in a strong challenge, Jarvis was with the Wellington boy at the last turn, Hopping fouling the ropes as Jarvis drew level, Jaiwis finished strongly with a foot to spare. J. Barry, who ma'de harder work of it than his team mate,, was a yard back third. (Time, 73 2-ssec. Geddes showed the way out in the. 440yds intermediate boys’ final, but was, soon displaced by Cramp and Bullittant, who turned together at the end of 100yds in 68 4-ssee.'.Geddes dropped further back over the next 100yds,but Crump,i employing a quicker stroke, was unable to drop Bullivant, iyho established a very slight advantage with a good turn at the 300yds mark. Geddes and Watkins were well out of it. Turning for the second last time, Bullivant led, but Crump gained at the last turn, and, amid tremendous excitement, the boys touched simultaneously in smin 51 3-ssec. Watkins was third, over half a lap back, a few yards ahead of Geddes. Geddes swam without the dash he showed in the other races. In the 50yds junior girls’ championship final, Miss Newall led Misses Rainey and Low for 25yds, but fouled the ropes badly, dropping back. Miss Rainey, drew away, from Miss Low turning slightly ahead, to win by a yard, Miss Newall a similar distance back third. Time, 32 4-ssec. Promising competitors were seen in the intermediate boys’ diving championship 1 , but the issue early resolved itself into a struggle between Mathieson and Kirkley. Mathieson in the compulsories off the low board showed a lack of confidence on a different board to what he was used to, even though he did a splendid back somersault, and was the only diver to make a real attempt at running the half borer off the top board. There was still little_ between them when the second section commenced at night, but_ Mathieson held the advantage over Kirkley, who is a very neat and likely 'diver, without Mathieson’s flight, The voluntaries clinched matters. The displays were well up to those of last year. The Benson Cup goes to Mathieson.
