CITY RATES
Only a week remains for the payment of city rates without the incurring of a 10 per cent, penalty, the last day for payment being Wednesday, January 27. Of the total amount of £304,000, which has to be collected for this financial year, about £200,000 has yet to be paid. There will probably be the usual eleventh-hour rush before next Wednesday, but it is probable that the amount outstanding will bo greater on this occasion than last year, though the rate of payment has not yet dropped to tho extent that migh#have been expected.
The rates for the last financial year were due in December, a sum of £170,000 being paid in during tho last eight days. The total amount to he collected this year is about £5,500 more than last year.
