AMATEUR ATHLETICS

* CHAMPIONSHIP ARRANGEMENTS MEETING OF OTAGO CENTRE Last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was presided over by Mr E. L. Macassey (president). The Chairman welcomed two new delegates to the centre—Mr W. H. Buckland, representing the Invercargill Club, and Mr W. J. Bennett, representing the St. Paul’s Club (Invercargill). He was sure their knowledge would be of advantage to the centre., MEETING AT MOSGIEL. The Otago Amateur Cycling Club applied for permission to hold a track and field meeting at Mosgiel on Saturday afternoon, February 6, if suitable arrangements could be made. Mr J. A. Johnston said that it was hoped by holding a meeting at Mosgiel to revive interest in the Taieri Club. The Chairman said the Cycling Club was to be congratulated on putting on a meeting at Mosgiel, as it was some time since a sports gathering had been held there. COMING FIXTURES. | It was reported that the Otago University interfaculty championships would be held on March 12, and that the secondary schools’ championships had been tentatively fixed for March 5 at Invercargill. On the suggestion of Mr Bennett, it was decided to include on the programme of the secondary schools’ athletic championship meeting shot putt and javelin throwing scratch events, which would not count for points for the senior championship shield. The question of what preliminary events should be staged on' the Friday night before the Otago at Carisbrook on February 27 was referred to the Sports Committee. Mr J. W. Holley said that the Southland Sub-centre Championships would probably be held on February 13, and he hoped as many Dunedin athletes as possible would be found competing. He asked the centre to make its usual donation of a gold medal for most points in championship events, and this action was decided upon. STARTING COMMANDS. The Secretary of the New Zealand Council wrote drawing the attention of centres to the words of command to be used by starters at all athleticmeetings. The association asked the centres to communicate with the various starters at meetings under their jurisdiction requesting them to use the words of command as set out in the handbook. The Chairman said that at the New Zealand championships last season the Otago Centre’s starter (Mr A. Burk) had started according to the commands laid down in the rule book, and one or two outside competitors had criticised the starter’s command. It was now acknowledged, however, that the Otago starter had been right. OTHER BUSINESS. The Chairman announced that the University Ground at Logan Park would be open nightly for training on payment or fees, and would be also available for sports meetings. The New Zealand Council wrote notifying that the North Otago Amateur Athletic Club had been granted affiliation, and also that March 11 and 12 had been approved as the dates for the New Zealand championships at Auckland.—Noted, The New Zealand Council advised that Mr D. Leslie’s name be forwarded to the International Amateur Athletic Federation as a suitable starter for the Olympic Games, provided that no financial obligation was assumed by the association. It had also been decided to request centres to watch the form shown by athletes with a view to ascertaining whether there are any prospective athletes for the Olympic Games. -Noted.
