Armstrong was showing better form at the end. Hodge led in the early stage against Gordon, being four up at the sixth head, but Gordon won the next eight heads and went to five up. It was Gordon’s game from then on, and it was declared finished at the twentieth head. Deare won without trouble from Murray, proving superior after seven heads. For the greater part of the game Edwards was not seriously challenged' by Laurenson, who was off form. Something of a surprise was provided when Burgess defeated Gray’s formidable rink. The Opawa rink led, 9-2, after five heads, and were 2 up at the fourteenth. All level at the sixteenth, hut then Opawa took the lead, Burgess playing brilliantly. Opawa’s wonderful bowling was applauded. Another notable victory was that of Dick against Forster, who had been regarded as a likely finalist. An interesting match between Walker and Calder was won by Walker. Calder played a forceful game, and led, 13-14, at the ninth, and 18-6 at the thirteenth. Then Walker and his team started a great run, and they made up ground rapidly. Oamaru lost steadiness against the superior tactics. The game between Bandy (Papanui) and J. Forster (Caversham) was very even in the early stages, but later Papanui drew ahead, and was never endangered. Moyes was in form right away against Skoglund, and retained his advantage.
