MONTHLY MEETING Tho monthly meeting of the Taieri River Trust, held yesterday, was presided over by Mr T. M. Ball (chairman). REPORTS. The Works Committee reported having inspected the contour channel in connection with tho expenditure of the grant of £l2O there, hut owing to the amount of material which would require to lie moved tho committee was of the opinion that tho work should be done by the dragline excavator, and that tho department should bo asked to hold over the grant in tho meantime.— Tho report was received. Tho Inspector reported as follows for tho month:—Tho new channel from C drain to Momona road and also tho lower end of the channel had been cleaned. The work in hand consisted in deepening the drain through Wilson’s. Tho Public Works men were cleaning tho channel through Berkley. Pumping was required for them for about two hours a day. Ranks had been attended to as usual.—The report was received. CORRESPONDENCE. The Dunedin City Council wrote notifying its agreement to the trust’s taking fifty of the unemployed in Dunedin for work on tho trust’s drainage on tho plain.—Received. Mr G. M'Neill, Outran), wrote advising that the ratepayers concerned would not agree to pay half cost of a culvert across Shand’s road between M'Neill’s and MacDonald’s.—lt was decided that no action be taken in the meantime, and that tho Works Committee should report in three months’ time. The Public Works Department wrote stating that there was no authority available to extend the period of the repayment of the loan.—lt was decided to inform the department that the trust was making tho necessary provision for tho repayment of the loan by its classification; but that legislation would bo necessary to deal with capitalisation of_ the interest. The District Engineer of the Public Works Department wrote advising the trust that tho head office of the department did not agree to the trust’s request which he had forwarded, and maintained that the department should not be required to pay rates on land acquired in connection with tho construction of protective works carried out on behalf of the trust.—Received. Tho new classification of the lands under the rating of the Taieri River ’[’rust was received from tho classifier. Tho following motion was carried: — GENERAL. In regard to the cutting of willows on the banks of the Taieri River, it was decided to appoint Messrs Mnnro and Massey to confer and decide where willows wore to be cut down. v It was decided to engage relief workers to clean out Lagoon drain. It was decided that pipes in the end of Kirk’s drain should be lowered, the settlers along this drain having decided to procure pipes for their crossings. On a settlor’s application it was decided to put battens on the bridge over the new cut to a width of 3ft to enable horses to negotiate the bridge in bad weather. It was resolved that the top gang be put on work near Outram for the present.
