UNEMPLOYED DEMONSTRATION.

TO THE EDITOR. “ Popoffski’s Wife” is under some misapprehension concerning the onlookers in Dowling street on Saturday evening. I am quite sure from what I overhead around me there that most of those present were there, like myself, to gain first-hand information about this deplorable business, and were, like myself, learning for the first time many facts which seem to have been kept in the background. From the re suit of ray observations I consider the demonstration justified, as no one after this need pretend ignorance of the deplorable straits in which many of our people find themselves. The spectacle of a lavish display of wealth by one section of the community and a fight to secure br,cad by another section in the same week must surely provide food for thought for anyone who possesses any moral sense at all, and any pride I may have felt in my native city has undergone considerable qualification since Saturday. A growing feeling of dissatisfaction with the Hospital Board has been greatly accelerated in the last few days, and some men of strength, imagination, and initiative seem badly needed there. I have heard from antiLabour sources complaints about the methods of the relief officer, of which I have no knowledge, and I feel that an inquiry into this matter would not do any harm, at least not to those seeking relief. I assure “ Popoffski’s Wife ” that a much larger attendance at Dowling street on Saturday evening would have been of greater benefit to the relief workers concerned.—l am, etc., Employed.
