The Court of 3larine Inquiry investigated the stranding of the steamer Newton Elm on December 19. George Davidson, the first mate, admitted that while he was at the wheel he erroneously altered the course westward instead of eastward to sea, causing the vessel to run on a beach on the north coast. The weather wag then hazy on land, but clear at sea. Expert evidence was given that very extensive damage had been, done to the vessel’s hull. The court suspended Davidson’s certificate for six months.
