NOTES ON THE RACING

[By Sr. Glair.] After some heavy showers the previous day the weather was fine but windy in the early part of the afternoon for the concluding day of the meeting. The rain left the course in excellent condition again, and there w r as a. good attendance, the gate receipts on both days being only a little short of 1 .:;t year’s. The racing was interesting, and for the first time in the history of the club no horse succeeded in winning a double at the meeting. The fixture was one of the best from the racing point of view the club has ever held, and it is satisfactory to be able to record that it will pan out a financial success also. Keen interest was taken in the race for the Lochclla Challenge Cup Handicap, _ as if Mr Con White won this year’s race it became his absolute property. Tho race was first contested in 1923, Air Reg. Acton-Adams presenting tho Cup for a district race over a mile and a-quartor. Fair Exchange (£101) was £3 10s better backed than Greenaway, Captivate being the only other starter. Tho favourite and Captivate led to the turn for home, tho pace over the early stages being very slow. Then Greenaway ran up to Fair Exchange and beat him home very comfortably by a length. Captivate was eight lengths away third. The Cup was presented by Mr W. A. Bodkin. M._. for the district. Sunward was withdrawn from the Valley Hack Handicap, leaving a onedividend field, and Academy (£189) was sent out an odds-on chance, only Anne Shakespeare (£6Q) and Potaka (£46) of tin others being backed. Genteel and Palada led the favourite and Fair Money along the back. The latter ran up to Genteel and Palada racing across the top, and this trio led the favourite into the straight. Genteel dropped out at the distance, and Academy, on tho outside, just got up in time to boat Fair Money by a short head, with Palada a short neck off third. Genteel was a poor fourth. Wynclalo was withdrawn from the Manuhenkia Harness Trot, and Lena Bingo,. (£l93{) Love Parade (£115.1), Mitchie Chimes (£641), Laracor (£451) and Homelight (£351) were the

best backed. The two favourites quickly drew clear, and at the end of live furlongs were leading Homelight, dolly Queen, and Mitchie Chimes. At the end of seven furlongs Mitchie Chimes fell and interfered with Homelight. With half a mile to go Lena Bingen and Love Parade were ten lengths clear of Jolly Queen, the others beaten off. At the distance Lena Bingen retired beaten, and then Love Parade ran out, and, finishing under the judge’s box, had only half a length to spare from Jolly Queen, who returned her supporters the best dividend of the meeting. Lena Bingen was live lengths off third, followed by Laudubon, Master M'Grath, and Duustream. Hot Tea was withdrawn from the Lauder Handicap and Blue Metal (£132), Caterpillar (£69), Master Anomaly (£54), and Dulen (£49i) were best backed. From a walking-up start, Glenrowan was slow to get on to his feet, and Caterpillar led along the back and across the top from Master Anomaly and Dulen. At the turn into the straight Blue Metal and Captivate joined Master Anomaly and Dulen, and at the distance Caterpillar was in trouble. Then Master Anomaly got squeezed out, and Captivate, Dulen, and the favourite were almost in line as they passed the post. The judge was unable to separate Blue Metal and Captivate, and placed Dulen third, a head away. Glenrowan was close up fourth, if not third. Kips (£121), My Counsel (£9o£), Flying Amy (£62), and Traylavah (£62) were the best fancied in the Cambrian Hack Handicap. My Counsel, from the rails, was the first to jump out and led all the way, winning by seven lengths from Kips, who was five lengths clear of Mussent Miss and Stringbow and Traylavah were next. The Judicial Committee held an inquiry into the running of the winner in this race as compared with his performance in the Clare Memorial Handicap on Saturday, in which he finished last. The owner’s explanation that My Counsel is unreliable' was accepted.

Laracor was withdrawn from the Poolburn Saddle Trotting Handicap, and -Deste, despite the fact that she was giving away 120yds to the limit horses was made favourite with £l27} on her chance, Lena Bingen (£B3}), Gnycora Dillon (£81), and Druid Child (£80) the next fancied. Guycara Dillon, Master M'Grath, Druid Child, and Huia Nelson failed to go away smartly, and Koakiaenoe led Lena Bingen, Erin’s Own, and Homelight over the first five' furlongs. Then Koakiaenoe drifted back, and Erin’s Own led Lena Bingen and Homelight along the hack with Deste making up her ground well. Lena Bingen took charge racing across the top, and led Erin’s Own, Homelight, and Deste into the straight. Lena Bingen drew out to wis by sixlengths from Deste, who got up to heat Homelight by a short length. Erin’s Own, Mitchie Chimes, and Koakiaenoo were next.

Genteel, Stringbow, La Pompadour, and Flying Amy were withdrawn from the final event, the Dunstan Hack Handicap, and the public went for Hot Tea (£171). Kipps (£1224), Fair Exchange (£78.)), and Academy (£65). The latter, from the rails, was slow to jump out, the favourite being the first to break the line. He was_ steadied, and Bellhird took charge racing round the far turn then Palada ran past also, and Bellhird and Palada turned into the straight well clear of Hot Tea, with Fair Ex-change and Traylavah next. Palada lasted long enough to heat Fair Exchange by a short neck, and Bdlbird was half a length away third, Trajdavah and Miss Planet next.
