KIWI SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Over 200 entries have been received for the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club’s carnival at the Municipal Baths next Thursday, at 8 p.m., and as popular prices are being charged a large attendance is anticipated. This meeting will mark the farewell appearance of the Otago intermediate and junior team which leaves the following week for Wellington to defend the War Memorial Shield at the New Zealand championships, and as a special attraction Reg. Geddes, the brilliant holder of the New Zealand intermediate boys’ 100yds breast-stroke title, will make an attempt on the breast-stroke New Zealand record for that distance of 77 4-ssec, which is held by C. Heard, the Olympic swimmer, and which has stood for eight years. Geddes recently got within 2sec of that time, and is expected to stand a big chance of lowering it next week. The 33 l-3yds handicap has drawn twenty-eight entries, including all the intermediate and senior stars, and some great racing should be witnessed. Nine or ten pairs have entered for the dual relay handicap, and a most interesting event should be the six-a-side relay championship of Otago, in which four teams will take part. Heats are necessary also in the 33 l-3yds back-stroke and 100yds breast-stroke events, and for the 50yds under seventeen no fewer than twenty-four entries have been received, including those of Reg. Geddes, Walter Jarvis, Miss W. Newall, J. Barry, and S. Jarvis, all members of Otago’s champion team for Wellington, The diving handicap has attracted eighteen competitors, and an event that should be most instructive to the public is the life-saving handicap, in which one of tho swimmers has to cover a length in his clothes, and then undress in the water. The 440yds championship of Otago will be contested by five swimmers, and a thrilling tussle is anticipated between Val Newall (the titleholder) and E. Turgis, the 100yds champion. Newall is also the holder of the 220yds title. A. blindfold race should be an amusing novelty, and the club is also arranging a novelty item which should bo well worth seeing. The programme is well varied and comprehensive.
