GOLD MINING

• ♦ A MARKED DEVELOPMENT VALUABLE FINDS PREDICTED [Spicul to thk ' Stir.’] CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. Increasing development in gold mining in New Zealand is predicted by the retiring Minister of Mines (Mr D. Jones), who, in a statement last night urged the Government to encourage prospecting over all mining areas of the dominion. “The portfolio of mines is one in which I have taken the keenest possible interest,” said Mr Jones, “ because I could see what great development would take place if the work were systematically undertaken. During the last few months there has been a marked development of mining, and a number of schemes which I have started are promising very useful results. Many of the old water races which fell into disuse when gold was cheap and wages were higher could not well be reconstructed in conjunction with the Minister for Unemployment and the water brought on to areas in former days could now be very profitably used. “ The large amount of prospecting being done to-day in all parts of goldbearing country in the dominion is certain to bring forward some valuable finds of gold. Apparently we got in the early days most of the easy gold, but I have no doubt there are many important discoveries still to be made. Gold is one of the most sought-after of our products, and I believe the Government would be well advised to push forward most energetically prospecting over all gold mining areas of New Zealand.”
