Guests who were in town for the Elworthy-Batchelor wedding hare mostly returned north. Mr and Mrs Gerald Ferguson are spending the week-end at Wanaka, as the guests of the Misses Mill. Miss Janet M'Kellar is at present the guest of Mrs A. E. Kerr, “Belmont” Cave. Miss Alma Browne is tho_ guest of Miss Tannock, at Keri Keri, Bay of Islands. Lady Fenwick, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs Percival James, of Wellington, has returned to Dunedin. The mayor and mayoress (Mr and Mrs R. S. Black) are enjoying a quiet holiday in Lauder, Central Otago. Mrs C. de R. Andrews and family, after spending a short holiday in Christchurch, have gone on to Arthur’s Pass. Miss Mary Anderson is at present the guest of Mrs C. C, Holland, at New Brighton, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Joseph Petre (Rotorua) are visitors to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs W. F. Abel and Miss Abel are spending a holiday in Queenstown. Miss M. Black, of Archerfield, and her sister, and Miss Brown, of Melbourne, have taken a furnished house in Queenstown for the vacation. . Dr Holloway and family are spending a camping holiday at Paradise. Miss Twinkle Couston will leave by the express on Monday morning, en route tor Australia, where a lengthy holiday will be spent. Mr and Mrs Alfred Fels are at present visiting Queenstown. The engagement is announced of Nancy Wooler, only daughter of the late Mr P. R. D, Leslie and Mrs Leslie of Gisborne to Dr Garth Rivers Stoneham, second son of Colonel and Mrs A. Stoneham, of Gisborne, formerly of Musselburgh, Dunedin, Mrs J. R. Robins and the Misses Robins, Oamaru, are at present visiting Dunedin. Miss H. Ensor (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs Robertson, George street. Mr and Mrs C. L. Ensor and Mr H. W. Ensor, Halswell, Christchurch, were guests at Albyn House while in town for the Ensor-Robertson wedding. Mrs A. L. Hungerford and their sons and the Misses Hungerford, of Queen street, are spending the holidays in Timaru. Mr arid Mrs J. Riley, late of Waitaki hydro, are sailing by the Marama from Wellington on Friday to take up their residence in Australia. A Press Association message from New York reports; that Dr Haldor Barnes, of Whinhall, Michigan, the physician who accompanied Rear-admiral R. E. Byrd on the Antarctic expedition, will be married on January 9 in Detroit to Miss Phyllis M. Greig, of New Plymouth, New Zealand, whom Dr Barnes met during his visit to the dominion. Queenstown has had. its full share of visitors during the holiday season. Over New _ Year all available accommodation in hotels and boarding houses was taken up, and many holiday-makers were to be found under canvas in the camping ground, and in other parts of this picturesque little town. De Lambert, Mrs De Lambert, and their two sons, of Riocarton, Christchurch, are the guests of Miss Culling, Dalmore. Miss Esme Crow, of Wellington, is the guest of Miss Crow, Anderson’s Bay. The Misses Diana and Janet Orbell, of Timaru, are the guests of Mrs .Sydney Neill, “ Belmont,” Musselburgh Rise. Mrs Masterton and family have returned from a holiday at Gladbrook, Middlemarch. A woman scientist who attended the centenary meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, is Miss Beatrice Blackwood. Miss Blackwood is a university demonstrator in ethnology at Oxford, but two years ago was granted leave of absence so that she might accept the offer made to her by the Institute of Human Relations, Yale University, to study _ the family life and conditions of a primitive community in the South Sea Islands. A delightful ending to the wedding celebrations on Wednesday was the ball given by Dr and Mrs Stanley Batchelor in the Tudor Hall for the entertainment of the younger guests. The decorations were beautifully carried out, stately delphiniums in varying shades of blue featuring largely in the scheme, and so carrying out the idea for the whole wedding festivities, which could aptly be described as a delphinium wedding. The Savoy Orpheans, under the direction of Mr Beath, rendered delightful music, which added greatly to the onoyment of the dancers. Dr and Mrs Batchelor received the guests in the lounge, Mrs Batchelor wearing a most becoming gown of elm green satin, embroidered in diamante.
