CONCERT AT BRIGHTON

AMENITIES SOCIETY'S EFFORT At the invitation of the local Amenities Society, a party of nineteen Dunedin musicians journeyed to Brighton last week and_ presented before an appreciative audience what was generally recognised to be one of the most enjoyable entertainments ever held in the district. The concert, which was held in the new hall, was organised by the society with a view to assisting the unemployed of the district during the holiday period, and, although the attendance was not as large as might have been wished, the financial results _ were, in the circumstances, very satisfactory. The party, under the conductorship of Mr J. A. Haggitt, rendered six rousing part-songs and three sea chanties, all of which met with unstinted approval, and in addition several solo items were The chanteymen were Messrs J. Haggitt, G. Stuart Thomson, G. Salmond, and the following also contributed:— Messrs F. W. Parker, J. Haggitt, J. Kennedy, J. Haig, D. Napier, R,’ W. Fox, and Miss Mary Somerville (songs), Messrs F. Cooper and G. Newton and Dr J. Thomson and Mr J. D. M'Kechnie (duets). Mr J. Aldridge acted as accompanist. At the conclusion of the concert the performers were the guests of the society at supper, and Mr George Bush, the president, thanked them on behalf of the society and of the residents for the willing manner in which they had come forward to assist a worthy cause.; _ Augmented by a subsidy from the society, the proceeds of the concert were expended on the widening of Queen street and the removal of the soil to a gully at the rear of the hall, where it is proposed to form a croquet lawn. This work, it might be mentioned, provided two, and in some cases three, days’ employment for unemployed men who would otherwise have Tiad to stand down over the holiday period.
