FROM 1 STAR' FILES The death has occurred in London of William Harrison Ainsworth, the famous novelist, aged seventy-seven. # # * * The attendance at the Caledonian gathering on the three days on which the sports were held exceeded 20,000, of whom over 16,000 paid for admission—the balance being made up by members, their families, and other persons entitled to free admission.
A match between the English cricketers and a combined team of Australia was played at Melbourne. England— First innings, 294 (Ulyett 87, Bates 58, Selby 55); second innings, 308 (Selby 70, Scotton not out 50, Bates 47). Australia First innings 320 (Horan 124, Murdoch 39, A. Bannerman 38, Palmer 34, Giffen 30); second innings—Australia, 127 for three wickets. Match drawn.
The quarterly returns show that during the December quarter of 1881 there were in the Otago educational district ,153 schools in operation, employing 250 male and 180 female teachers, besides twenty-two teachers of sewing. The attendance at the town and suburban schools was: Normal 732, Union Street 646, Arthur Street 628, Albany Street 615, Caversham 546, George Street 522, William Street 476, Forbury 449, Mornington 327, Kaikorai 323, North-east Valley 321, Kensington 224.
