CROQUET

SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS [Per United Press Association.] TIMARU, January 7. The South Island croquet championships were continued to-day in summerlike weather. The semi-final of the open championship between Mrs Corbett (Dunedin) and Mr M'Creath (Gore) did not_ provide brilliant croquet in the opening stages, but towards the close of the first game both players improved in tactics and a sterling finish was the result. 1 Mr M'Creath did not find the green to his liking, and his opponent established a comfortable lead before he managed to pick up a ball. The early hoops took some time to make, neither player securing an impressive break. Mrs Corbett had seven hoops to her credit before her opponent opened his account. Play became more exciting when Mrs Corbett, who had been driving attractively, went in to make a good break of eight and placed the blue ball on the peg laid for the black. Mr M'Creath missed, a roquet, and Mrs Corbett made her final -hoop, but failed to pick up her next ball. Mr M'Creath again missed his drive, and Mrs Corbett laid for pegging out. Picking up well, her, opponent sailed in to make a break of nine hoops with his second ball, the score then being 24-21 in the lady’s favour. Mr M'Creath placed two balls in the corner, and Mrs Corbett failed to effect the drive. Mr M'Creath’s next shot went amiss, and Mrs Corbett pegged out, the final score being 26-21. In the second session play was of a more interesting nature. Mrs Corbett made an attractive break of nine with one ball and another break of seven. Mr M'Creath’s play improved considerably, and hoops fell to liim much more quickly than during the first game.
