(Received January 6, at 11 a.m.)’ Blazing now along a front of about 400 miles, the Western fires are continuing with terrifying devastation, almost unchecked. Despite the hopeless situation, however, men are fighting day and night m shifts. People continue to pray for rain, but none is promised for at least forty-eight hours* It is impossible to give even an approximate estimate of the damage,; which runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds. Mile upon mile of fencing has been destroyed, and thousands of sheep have perished. Thus far station buildings have been saved.
