Y.M.C.A. BOYS’ DIVISION

GAMP TAHORA

[By Obseiivee.]

Despite the unsettled nature of the weather, the boys at Camp Tahora have been able to engage in a number of outdoor activities. On Wednesday last a party °f twenty senior boys walked to tho Silver Peaks and back._ The day was ideal for tramping, being cloudy and cool, but not damp. Tho walk along the track up the thick-clad hillside, with dense bush on either side, almost obscuring the narrow pathway from view, was more like a scene from a fairy book than an actual experience. Though the last scramble up the peak itself was indeed the most exhausting, it was well rewarded by the vast and comprehensive view obtained from tho summit. After a snack, the party set off back for camp, little the worse for the twenty-mile outing. Though tho weather lias interfered with tho sports programme, No. 5 tent has proved its supremacy in hockey by not losing a match to date. Tests nave boon started in athletics, and are being continued throughout this week. The swimming pool lias been in daily use, though it has proved rather too cold for those not used to the water. The High Street School boys in No. 8 tont have been carrying the tent competition before them. They have won the banner on every occasion save two. New Year’s Eve will not soon be forgotten by those who witnessed the lampas race from Mosgiel to Whare Flat—a distance of six miles. Thirteen boys, posted at intervals of half a mile or so along the road, carried a lighted torch in relays from Mosgiel to tho camp, where the last boy set light to tho camp lire. A short service was then held around tho fire, while the new year was welcomed in. The darkness, tho stillness broken only by the sound of the camp tahora ghost parading to and fro, the flicker of light in tlie distance, the sudden glare in tho silent distance as the last torch was lit, the flame moving towards the camp and tho circle grouped around tho blazing fire—all created an impression not socn to ho forgotten. On Sunday evening a party of twelve hoys were kindly entertained by Mr and Airs Tyson at their home. After a good sing-song round the fire a delicious supper was served, and the party hade an unwilling farewell to their kind hosts.
