THE THIRD TEST

AUSTRALIA IN WINNING POSITION SOUTH AFRICA SEVEN FOR 198 MELBOURNE, January 5. The weather was pleasant and the wicket was showing slight signs of wear when the test match was resumed. Four balls sufficed to finish the Australian innings, with no addition to the score. The South Africans commenced their second innings very slowly, but Christy livened things up, being partial to Ironmonger, whom he frequently vigorously drove to the off. Fifty was reached in 50 minutes, then the scoring became very slow again. Christy reached 50 in 98 minutes, and the century was brought up in 130 minutes. When the partnership had realised 102 runs Christy was smartly taken behind the wickets. He had batted 112 minutes and hit five boundaries. His innings was a mixture of patience and aggression. Mitchell took not the slightest risk and missed many opportunities of scoring. At the tea interval the score was one for 133. Mitchell was dismissed by the second ball after tea. for 177 minutes, but hit no boundaries. Morkel went in the next over, and a big change thus suddenly came over the game. _ Taylor proceeded very quietly for a time, then with neat strokes obtained 11 runs off one of Wall’s overs. The Taylor-Cameron partnership added 40 runs, but the batsmen were mainly on the defensive when they should have been hitting the tired bowling. Taylor batted for 108 minutes and hit four boundaries. The last half-hour’s batting was very dull. Ironmonger took four for 53 off thirty-nine overs. The attendance was 9,000 and the receipts were £373. Details:— SOUTH AFRICA.
