April 9.-—Vauxhall Cup and Sell Memorial Shield tabes,, Vauxhall., BROAD BAY NEWS, The outstanding event for the New Year will be the regatta at Broad Bay on Friday, and some exceedingly interesting contests should be witnessed. The programme is a comprehensive one for yachtsmen, speed boat, and outboard. motor boats. The day will be a long one, and it behoves stewards to see that boats are oh their marks in good time. There is nothing more annoying to spectators than to have long dreary intervals between events. The committee, however, has arranged for music to be broadcast over a fairly wide area, and this will serve to fill in the day. The results will also be broadcast. Excellent entries have been received. The race for the big yachts is over a course of four miles, which gives spectators an excellent chance to follow the competitors’ progress all the way. The outboard championship of Otago will also take the boats twice round the and it will be held early in the afternoon. Five entries have been received for the Wakefield Cup Heat, and the finish , should be close. The field for the All-.comers’ Handicap numbers twenty, and many of the well-known boats are taking part. Immediately after the'Broad Bay regatta Mr J. Hudson, in his launch _ Tuatea, will leave on a cruise to Akaroa. His sailing companions will bo Messrs J. Potter and T. Brooks.

Mr A. Begg’s Laura is being put in order, but it is not likely that she will be put into the water this season.

MAC ANDREW BAY REGATTA

The North-east Harbour Boating Club’s 1931 regatta was a complete success, and every event was sent off on schedule time. The neiv set of starting gear was much appreciated by the competitors, who expressed their satisfaction at tho results obtained. Mr F. Percy was the yacht handicapper, and Mr J. H. Barton acted for motor boats. The judges (Mr A. Challis and Captain Nicholas) were very strict with tho competitors, and kept a sharp eye for any infringements of the rules; and tho starters and timekeepers (Messrs R. Hellyer, A. Challis, _ and N. Challis) were right on their job. Tho committee’s thanks are due to the members of tho Otago Rowing Association for the valuable assistance they rendered during the day. The secretary reports that all officials went out of their way to help in regard to detail matters, and the fairway was kept as clear as possible. The plan that the club had- printed in the programme was very useful to competitors. Tho committee had done all that was • possible to cater for tho boating men of the harbour, and this, together with the large number of entries, made the day the success it was. Frolic, Good Luck, and Harlequin are to race on some future date, and if possible January 2 will be the day r selected to sail the race for 12ft Cm boats and under. The prize is to bo .riven by a few of the yachtsmen to help the lads along. It was unfortunate for these boats that the wind dropped and they could not get up to the starting line in time. The dance in the evening was a huge success. Mr R. Percy in his big launch took care of the Orphanage Baxid boys. He called for them at Vauxhall and took them homo again after the regatta. The hoys- were delighted with the novelty, and a committee of ladies provided them with cakes, ice creams, and other things which boys love.

THE ELLIOTT CUP. The contest for the Elliott Cup will be sailed on Saturday at Macandrew Bay, and there will also be a sweepstake for all-comers’ launches.
