AMERICAN REPUBLICANS
THE INDEPENDENT GROUP POSSIBILITY OF NEW PARTY Preti Association—By Telegraph—Copyright* WASHINGTON, December 29. (Received December 30, at 12.25 p.m.)l The Republican Independents are seriously considering a third party movement in 1932 in the event of tho Republican and Democratic conventions failing to nominate a man to their liking. The group comprises Senate Independents, and it is opposed to tho renomination of President Hoover. Conferences have been going on looking for a man to contest Mr Hoover’s re-, nomination, but no single candidate has been agreed upon. Senator Norris] (Nebraska) has been asked to’ stand i against Mr Hoover, but he has declined. Senator Norris, however, is, definitely understood to be ready to \ support any of tho four candidates \ under consideration. If a third party ] is organised he is looked upon, together] with Senator Borah, as a likely head} of the ticket. Possible candidates arei Senator Borah, Senator Johnson (Cali-! forma), and Senator Pinchot (Penn-] sylvania). Privately it is intimated; that none of the potential Democratic j candidates, with the possible exception] of Governor Roosevelt (New York) isj acceptable. Senator Borah has always i stood by the Republican Party, but he! has been in frequent conflict with the; Hoover policies, principally on the tariff and farm relief.
