THIRD AND FOURTH ROUNDS [Per United Press Association.] NAPIER, December 29. The chess tournament was continued to-day. The following are the results of the third round:— J. A. Erskine (Southland) beat K. O’Hallorau (Napier). Sicilian defence. —White outplayed early in the game and lost two pawns. Black thenceforth had no difficulty in forcing a win. E. H. Severno (Nelson) beat the Rev. A. Miller (Westport). _ French defence. —Miller advanced his queen’s side pawns. Scverne blocked them and shortly won an exchange. Later he won a piece and Miller resigned. C. •). S. Purdy (New South Wales) lost tp F. K. Rolling (Wellington). Queen’s gambit declined. Purdy castled on the queen’s side and advanced the king’s side pawns. Kelling, retaliated with his queen’s side pawns and shortly developed a terrible and direct attack on the white king. Purdy’s ingenuity could not save him and he resigned on his twenty-seventh move. ■ W. J. Fairburn (Wellington) lost to H. N. Maddox (Auckland). Queen’s pawn game.—Maddox picked up a couple of pawns and later launched a successful attack with queen, rook, and knight. E. L. Smith (Napier) lost to A. W Gyles (Wellington).—At one stage of the game Smith seemed to have a royal chance, but Gylos’s longer experience, together with several weak moves on the part of Smith, brought about the champion’s third win. J. C. Grierson (Auckland) lost to E S. Rutherford (Taranaki). Queen’s gambit declined.—At the adjournment this appeared to be a draw, but Rutherford managed to score a full point. R. 0. Scott (Wanganui) lost to G. Gundersen (Victoria). Sicilian defence. —Scott made a blunder on the ninth move and resigned immediately'. The winner’s clock registered only' 9min. The following are the results of the fourth round.— Gundersen lost to Purdy. Sicilian defence.—Gundersen won an exchange for two pawns, but later had to give up a queen for two bishops. Purdy had an easy win, but threw away his chance. Gunderson, however, missed his opportunity, and so lost at least half a point. Gyles beat Grierson. Queen’s gambit declined. —Gydes developed a strong attack, winning a piece. Kelling beat Fairburn. Ruy Lopez. —Kelling got both rooks and a queen on the open file, and with his own king in safety his attack was irresistible. Rutherford lost to Scott. Queen’s gambit declined.—Rutherford, through an oversight, lost his rook on the eighteenth move. O’Halloran lost to Severno. Queen’s pawn game.—Severno won an exchange, and with the extra' passed pawn secured a win. The Rev. Miller beat E. Smith. King’s gambit.—Smith looked like giving trouble at one stage, but was quite outpla.yed at the finish. Maddox lost to Erskine. Zukertort. The following is the position of the players:—
