CAUGHT IN CURRENT
YOUNG MAORI DROWNED FATAL RACE IN SWIFT RIVER [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 29. Thomas Ngaha, aged twenty-seven, a married man, was drowned in the Waikato River at Rangiriri on Sunday afternoon. With two other young Maoris —John Tumai and Percy Dicksou—he started to race across the river, which is about 7£ chains wide at this point, with a very strong current. Tumai turned back, and the other two got into difficulties. Dickson called for help, but Ngaha was unable to help him owing to his own extremity. Dickson eventually got ashore, but Ngaha was carried away and seen to sink. His wife unsuccessfully attempted his rescue in a canoe.
