GOVERNMENT PRECAUTIONS DISAFFECTED LEADERS ARRESTED Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyist. CALCUTTA, December 26. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who is the most uncompromising of all the Congress leaders, was arrested in a tram while he was on his way to meet Mr Gandhi in Bombay. It is obvious that •the Government is taking no chances in 'view of the possible revival of the civil disobedience movement. Abdul Chaffar Khan, who is known hs “ the Frontier Gandhi,” was arrested, together with his brother, under she new ordinance, and deported from the frontier province. NEW YORK, December 26. Information received has led the local Authorities to believe that several revolutionary leaders who had been hiding jn the jungles around Chittagong eluded -the military cordon, escaped from the district, and made their way to Calcutta. Calcutta is in the midst of its traditional Christmas week carnival, which includes the polo championship. Police • resources are therefore sorely taxed, and the citizens are banded together against possible terrorism. The inhabitants generally are friendly disposed towards the troops. The wearing of the Red Shirt uniform is banned throughout the frontier districts. Over 400 Red Shirts have been arrested. The situation in the United Pronvices has improved. The district authorities are hopeful of realising the rent arrears .without difficulty. A meeting at Poona presented Subhas Chandra Bose, the Bengal Congress chief, with an address of welcome enclosed within the muzzle of a silver revolver. POLICE .AND RED SHIRTS TWO SERIOUS CLASHES. DELHI, December 27. (Received December 28, at 11 a.m.) Two collisions between the police and ;the frontier Red Shirts had fatal result*. One occurred at Kohat and the other in a village near Peshawar. Cayalry was required to disperse the hostile crowds'and the Red Shirts, who lost twelve killed and many wounded. Several police and troopers were injured. IN EASTERN BENGAL ROUND-UP OF REVOLUTIONARY ' SUSPECTS. CALCUTTA, December 27. (Received December 28, at 11 a.m.) The round-up of revolutionary suspects in eastern Bengal is proceeding. Many were arrested, including eight men known to be,connected with the Chittagong armoury raid last year. A strong watch is being maintained on European clubs, restaurants, business premises, and residences of prominent people, owing to anticipation that the anarchists will make a desperate concerted attack before they are trapped by the slowly-tightening police net.
