ROYAL SAXON WINS OTAGO HANDICAP GOOD AFTERNOON'S SPORT ' After three days’ broken weather the skies cleared again for the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Summer Meeting, and the good crowd present attended under ideal summer climatic conditions. The track had been nicely softened by the good rains, and though a little slow when the racing commenced, quickly improved under the seffect of the bright sunshine, and when the seventh race was run it was at its best. . ~ . The racing was interesting, despite the fact that several winners scored rather easily, and, though there appeared to be some rough riding in the second race, which seriously affected the chances of at least one horse, the sport was free from anything questionable. Mr MTvor’s starting was very good, and despite the big fields he had to dispatch not one horse was left during the whole afternoon. The dub was unlucky in the fact that several solidly supported favourites failed to race up to expectations, and that four of the six dividend payers in the first three races were outsiders. This locked the money up in few pockets, and must have seriously affected the totalisator turnover. On the first day of the Summer Meeting last year £16,497 10s was handled on eight races, the amount on the first seven races being £13,374. On Saturday £11,688 was handled, which, all circumstances being considered, must be considered quite satisfactory. , ~ , , The Wingatui stables provided four winners—Royal Limond, Solmar, Royal Saxon, and Gold Paper—Riccarton two, in Riri and Kakara, who were the only first favourites to score, and V ashdyke one. Merry Peel. Concluding results in detail: — FEDERAL HANDICAP, of ISOsovs; second 20, third 10. 6f. 14_Mr A. H. Fisher’s b g SOLMAR (Solferino Marsa, syrs, 7.0 (A. Leckie) ... ... 1 12—Mr E.
