MACANDREW BAY REGATTA

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE KEENLY-CONTESTED RAGES Attracted by the fine weather, a large crowd of people from Dunedin and the surrounding districts wore present on Saturday at the Maeandrew' Bay Regatta, "which proved one of the most highly successful fixtures yet held at the popular seaside resort. The weather looked a trifle uncertain in the morning, but before the programme of yacht, motor boat, and rowing events was timed to start a bright sun shone through the sky, and the shore and wharf were thronged with spectators in the afternoon. At the outset a light south-westerly breeze was blowing, but it stiffened during the afternoon to a northeasterly.

The yacht and motor boat events produced keen competition, and a feature was the success of the Eileen, which not only won the 34ft Jcllicoc class handicap from the back mark, but also annexed the handicap for the 18ft class. In the. majority of races the effect of the flood tide and the light wind was such that the limit boats lost their handicaps,- and often got away not far ahead of the backmarkers. Although this affected the handicapper’s work, some interesting racing was witnessed. Minnow won the All-comers’ Yacht Handicap in good style from Vera, and Dawn also went a fine race. The motor boats provided the spectators with plenty of thrills, and the speed launch championship of Otago Harbour was won by Tui H. The race for cruising launches went to Rambler, Daphne won tho race for motor boats (eight miles per hour and under), and Argo won the 0. C. Wakefield Cup heat for speed boats of fourteen miles per hour and over. Hawk carried off tho honours in the outboard motor boats’ handicap. Tho rowing races, under the control of officials of tho Otago Rowing Association, were even more interesting than usual, some exciting finishes being witnessed. The prize money was divided among all the local clubs, -with tho exception of tho Maeandrew Bay Rowing Club, and representatives of that club' put up a gallant fight to be narrowly beaten out of second place in the youths’ double sculls. Crews from the Queen’s Drive Boating Club scored the most, but, though the Drive senior crow was first past the judges in the four-oared event, it was disqualified for crossing the course of the Porfc_ Chalmers crew near the start. This disqualification resulted in tho Otago flowing Club’s crew being placed first, tii© only major honour won by the Otago "men during the afternoon, though tho club’s representatives wore frequently in tho minor placings in other events. Port Chalmers and North End Clubs also met with a good measure of success, and a feature of the rowing programme wsa tho fine performance of C. Ncilson and J. Solomon, of the Port Chalmers Club, who reaped the reward of solid training by heading off tho Queen’s Drive crew' (G. Clark and H, Pritchard) in the senior double sculls. Special mention should be made of the efforts of the coxswains of the various crews, the steering throughout the day being the best for some time past. Tho whole programme went off without the slightest hitch, the organisation of the regatta and the general arrangements reflecting great credit upon the commodore (Mr AV. 11. Riddle) of tho North-east Harbour Boating Club, the secretary (Mr C. J, Hook), and the assistant secretary (Mr R. H. Ross), who spared no pains to ensure tho success of the gathering. They wore backed up by an energetic band of officials, and special praise should be bestowed on the ladies’ committee, which worked so hard in looking after the catering arrangements for officials and competitors alike. Mr E. Percy was the handicapper for tho yacht races, and Mr J. TL Barton handicapped the motor events. The judges for tho yachts and motor boats were Mr A. Challis, sen., and Captain Nicholas. Messrs W. B. Robinson, R. Hellyer ,and A. Challis, jun., wore tho starters, and Messrs N. Challis and S. J. Webb the timekeepers. For tho rowing races Mr E. V, Eairbairn was the starter, Mr W. G. Glengarry umpire and timekeeper, and Messrs W. Robinson, C. R. Caffin, 0. Duncan, and S. G. Styche the judges. During the afternoon proceedings w'erc considerably enlivened by the playing- of tho Waverley Boys’ Band. Results (P.C.R.C., Port Chalmers Rowing Club; Q.D.8.C., Queen’s Drive Boating Club; 0.R.C..
