BROADSIDING THRILLS

GOOD SPORT AT SPEEDWAY BRIGHTON SCOOPS THE POOL The feature of Saturday night’s hroadsidiug meeting at the Speedway Hoyle was the vastly improved form shown by the local rider, Allan Orighton, who was making only his second night’s appearance in competition, and yet made a clean sweep of every event that ho contested. Starting in three heats and three finals, ho was unbeaten during the evening, winning the Forbury and Otago (open) Handicaps, and also the Tahuna Hark Handicap for local riders. He was on good marks, but rode consistently and well, his best time being DC 2-ssec in the final of the Otago Handicap. His great finishing effort against the Melbourne star, Cliff Bysouth, in the Forbury final, in which these riders were separated by half a length, provided the biggest thrill of the evening. Three thousand spectators witnessed a good night’s sport, and though the recent rain- had made the track heavier than usual, militating against fast times, there was some spectacular broadsiding, the four Australian riders again giving the public plenty of action. The Flying Four Points Race, in which the overseas men competed, was won by Frank Elms, of Sydney, who rode well throughout the evening. Both he and Cliff Bysouth, who was runner-up in the match event, showed more dash on the turns than at the first meeting, and Bysouth’s 87 l-sscc in a heat of the Forbury Handicap was the fastest time of the night. It was put up in a grand finish with “ Ginger ” Inglis, who showed his best form to date.

Tho programme was put through in good time, though spills and minor machine trobules were more frequent than usual. Both Laurie Packer and Tommy Tompkins, two members of the Australian team, suffered considerably in this respect, though each gave a taste of his quality during the . evening. Tompkins fell during tho night and had to receive medical attention, but fortunately none of tho crashes was attended by very serious consequences.
